Gears of War 1 has much worse host advantage. Though host advantage in itself was pretty bad. It became annoying.
That why I absolutely love Gears 3. There is virtually no host advantage. Which is so nice. The game actually plays fair.
Gears 3 was great....till they thought it'd be an awesome idea to kick you off dedicated servers if you didn't fork over more money for DLC.
Should I get an Xbox whatever account to play online? It's not the cost that's holding me back, it's the humiliation of getting bummed by 12yr olds at any game.

Play a good game that has great competitive multiple or strong online Co-op. Gears, Street Fighter, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead etc.

Apparently the multiplayer for Max Payne 3 is actually pretty damn good. It's not necessary to have a mic though. If you add some decent people you can stay in party chat to avoid game-chat (and potential aggravation.

May I make a suggestion. If you want Left 4 Dead, just pick up Left 4 Dead 2 and get all the DLC. You'll get all the original characters and campaigns from Left 4 Dead and then you'll get like 4 more campaigns.
