Gamerscore, achievements, etc
I don't play online on my Xbox. I have a Gamerscore. Does the Gamerscore match you up to similarly rated opponents online? Is that what it's for?

I will never understand the point of Achievements. HELLO, ARBITRARY MILESTONE, THANKS FOR POPPING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF MY GAME AND RUINING THE WHOLE AESTHETIC.

I don't care about achievements, myself

For my trophies are just achievements that I go out of my way to accomplish them if I am in the area and if not then I will do them later if the game permits me to do that.

The achievement should be actually doing stuff in a game...rather than getting an achievement.

That's true, and I agree

But I can see the appeal in getting achievements for some people

Just a matter of what you look for in a game

At first it's like meh. But then damn! I want more out of this game. I've seen the pros and cons for achievements/Trophies and while they are valid there is really no harm in achievements. As the name says, you've achieved something in a game. They also add replay-ability to the game; extending the life span to complete these challenges set, though may not be necessary.

For example if you have if you have Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 on Xbox and Wii. On Wii you complete the game and there isn't much left to do. But on Xbox there's a challenge to beat the final stage of the game (7 bosses) without taking a single hit. It added an additional 2 hours to my total gameplay. Or if you get to Rank 100 (your wings) in Gears of War 2 you get an achievement for your Xbox profile. S'all good. Another good example of a challenge was Ninja Gaiden 2 which was play through the game using only one weapon (7 times through the game with each weapon in total). Gamers have been doing that for years such as: completing Zelda 1 using only bombs so now you get a bit of recognition for taking on a challenge.

At the moment is says I'm on 83,703 but (while typing) I'm playing Sonic '06(offline) so I'm now 84503K (when I log back in). I admit, I love achievements/trophies.

Edit: I'd like to add I'm a bit fugging pissed with Sonic Adventure DX. DLC achievements are glitched. many other people are having this problem too. >: (

I s'pose I can get that, but I still think they should be in-game achievements. With in-game PLINK notices. Let's be honest, you get an achievement whenever you get to a checkpoint now. Achievements are not achievements.

I've actually never seen that in a game. I've seen this argument case where
"The Simpsons give you 5Gs for pressing start = Achievements are lame". True but that's 5/1000. Achievements allow developers to be creative with their achievements.
Beat Act 1 = 10Gs <- I see nothing wrong with that. I've never seen a checkpoint achievement though (What game has done this?). Not to mention if that's true, it's a minority case over the majority so I wouldn't even consider that a valid point. For every achievement that's "Press Start > Gain Gamerscore" I could easily argue back "Beat Ninja Gaiden 2 on the hardest setting/Clear all Trials in SF4/Beat Through the Fire and the Flames on Guitar Hero 3 etc".

I s'pose my problem is that I don't know what "Beat Act 1 = 10Gs " actually means.

RE: Gamerscore, achievements, etc
For me, I really like trophies in the game. Mostly because I'm one of those crazy game perfectionists who likes to show off a sign of skill. Trophies a fine way of doing that. I think it's better than just in-game stuff, back in the PS2 days when I would take hours upon hours getting 100% on a game and just being able to tell the few friends who gave a shit didn't really mean much.

I guess my point is that I'm an egotistical, bragging, trophy whore. And proud.

RE: Gamerscore, achievements, etc
I enjoy some of the really difficult ones, especially if you get a cool reward for getting them that let's you show off to people that you've done something a lot of them haven't.
For a crappy example, I don't care much for COD and I don't feel like I need to bring up any of the over abundant issues with it, but It can still be fun to just hop online and play, and I just so happened to find a copy of the Wii version of MW3 on the street (seriously... that happened), and now I'm one of relatively few players on the version to have unlocked the "Loner" achievement (which is a bitch to get by the way), which just so happens to give you a Mario icon. That sort of thing feels good, not like a lot of others where it says "Oh, you beat 3 pigs up, ACHIEVEMENT GET BLARGH!"

Even though I could have more, I like having about 37,000 Gamescore, since I've said in another thread I think that each 10,000 represents the amount of years I've had an Xbox.

Playing online indeed gives fun, but it also creates rivals and enemies, if spoken in terms of console gaming. Ok, before any sort of controversies let me clear that its my own opinion and I may be wrong, but rather than to play online its better to play with self or with friends.

I think achievements can be good and they verify to other people that you have indeed done something on a game worthy of an achievement. I will play through a game and if I want to play through again I'll go for 100% and all trophies. I like how it adds replay value. Oh but trophies and achievements for playing online? No... just no..

It's been a while I'm struggling to remember a game I played that they actually gave me an achievement for taking a step. Literally pressing a button.
Unless a game really get into me I won't spend many extra time trying to get achievements. And even when it does, I'll really only try and get them if they actually mean something in-game, i.e. some currency, boosts, items.
