The point is he does it to see if it works he never said he just keeps it for free instead of purchasing it you're just assuming he does just like with the rest of us you assume we just steal the products and we never pay for it that's not what a fair proportion of pirates do they are actually sampling the product to see if they want to buy it completely buy it and if they think it's worth their money they do that I've already stated that I do this myself the most current example being Minecraft I played a pirated copy for a couple of weeks then decided that the game was worth the 10 euros it cost and bought the game for real and if I didn't like it i would have deleted it and not come back to it.

OK actually. I admit I'm completely wrong if this is the case. Fine, if you pirate it then buy it. Then whatever. I'll take you word on (along with CingChris and Melirune) that that's the case.
You guys proved me wrong and far to "assuption-like". It's when you try justify piracy and somehow act like a smartarse about it by ripping off developers. I still disagree with some of your points but if your quote above is true. Then fine I'm wrong about all of this.

It's crap like this that annoys me

That's less pirating and more changing the form of media something you already own is on I have done this with old games that I own with emulators so I can play it on a computer and have the ability to actually save in the middle of a game and come back later and map my controls I have even bought a wired Xbox 360 controller for my emulators to make things easier and play them the way they were meant to be played with a controller not a keyboard in the end emulators give enhancement to the gameplay because I have more control of certain aspects.

It's still pirating. I mean legally, rather than morally speaking. Personally I don't give a hoot, though.

Yes I agree that method of thinking is just retarded it's just you trying to justify outright stealing something and there is noway to justify something like that when I do outright pirate something and keep it and just not pay for it I don't try to justify it I acknowledge I'm wrong and that I stole it there's no way around that fact and when I refer to myself doing such acts I'm just as blunt about it literally saying "Oh that I just stole that off the internet." it's wrong doing it but if you're gonna do it at least own up to the fact that you did it, don't try to justify it.

Yeah as it seems. But in general piracy has always been on the "Why do I care" side. There's still some stuff you and the others said I don't agree with though (or yet to understand).

I may be strongly opinionated on certain topics but I'm also smart enough to admit I'm wrong, and in this case. I was wrong.

RE: Do you pirate?
There's nothing wrong with being strongly opinionated at all. Unfortunately on a topic such as this, things are both right and wrong from differing viewpoints.

Yes - pirating media is wrong. But when you admit that, you have to keep going. Is it right to right-click+save-as a picture you come across on the internet? Is it right to record a song you hear on the radio? Is it right to record a movie or sporting event when it's playing on TV?

And then you have to ask yourself - "have I ever in my life taken the work of someone without paying for it, whether intentionally or not?". Most people in life have at one point or another pirated a form of media Big Grin

Also, it's fine that you don't agree with everything I say. Life would be boring if everyone had the same viewpoint.

RE: Do you pirate?
This is one of those topics that I have consciously decided to have no opinion on. When it comes to piracy I navigate purely by instinct. It's too complex for me to wrap my head around it in ethical terms because there is a lot of wrong on both sides, so I go by practicality and pure gut instinct. As a result, I don't pirate much, but I pirate some.

A happy result of my cowardly fence-sitting position is that I'm fine if people tell me they've pirated everything and I'm fine if people tell me that they think pirates are scum.

Beardy you haired genius.

And guys, can we not get into an Ethics debate on the forum please? I posted my opinions on the matter, as did everyone else, let's stop arguing about it and accept the fact that people think differently on the matter and aren't likely to change their opinions any time soon. So shut up about it here and enjoy the video game trivia.

To be fair, I don't think this is a particularly emotionally charged thread is it? I say argue away so long as it doesn't get nasty. It's on-topic, right?

Just so you know your wishes have already been met before you posted this, and plus a thread would be boring if it didn't spark any form of debate you just have to not let it get out of hand because if that happens then the thread gets ruined. Alright back on topic everyone. Big Grin

One thing though. Surely if a game gets an 90 something on Metacritic(stupid site I know) why would you need to "demo" it for yourself to see if it's good? With written and video reviews, surely that's enough?

Once again this question is not to me but I will answer anyway, because we all have our own opinions just because a ton of people like something doesn't mean you'll like it too, it's all personal preference so I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to buying most games.

Well I think that the score varies between users, for instance Counterstrike Source got a 93 on Metacritic, so I bought it when it was on sale and I hate the game. Same with Mass Effect, it comes down to a matter of opinion. If I had tried either of those games, even as just a demo, I never would've made the purchases.
