I know right

Left 4 Dead

It's the same thing over and over. Go through waves of zombies, shoot zombies with same guns, fight a tank, and repeat. Seriously.

CoD was already mentioned, and I also believe that Dead Space is pretty over rated for how "scary it is.

RE: Most Overrated Games
You know, I'd hate to be THAT GUY, but I'd say the Borderlands games, both of them, are pretty overrated. Yea, they're decent fun, but get boring and repetitive far too quickly. Pus, the stories are pretty sub-par, even for a modern game. And I mean the over-arching story, not the stories of the individual side-quests and whatnot.

Now, my next point will be sightly off-topic, but still fits in with the theme of overrated things. Competitive gaming. All of it. Racing, fighting, shooting, you name it. While it's perfectly fine to play with friends and the like, I find it a bit unsettling how "hardcore" people act sometimes. To me, it ruins the mood of fun and having a good time. It's just my opinion, but feel free to debate against it if you wish. I have no qualms over friendly debating, just as long as you're not going to be intentionally antagonistic towards me for my views.

RE: Most Overrated Games
Well Ouberry I will say that I agree that the "hardcore" people are ridiculous in any competitive multiplayer game, but with the fighting games there is actually skill and tactics that go into winning a round of that, (and there's even tournament communities for most fighters) where to use your other examples of shooters (all you do is shoot someone else there really isn't a whole lot of strategy unless you coordinate with your team on tactics) and racing (you drive around a track really fast absolutely no strategy and anyone can be good at it) there really isn't a point for the "hardcore" community in those games, but with the fighters I am going to have to disagree with you on.

I like L4D, it's great with friends but even then it gets stale pretty quickly. It's the kind of game that's best enjoyed new.

Do not patronize me. I know fighters have a bigger community for competitive gaming. I also know about the tournaments. I'm not an idiot. I fully understand the strategy that goes into certain fighting games. However, I still say the competitive and "hardcore" players are annoying, as they take the game far too seriously, instead of just trying to have fun.

RE: Most Overrated Games
I might get hated for this, but I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a very overrated game.

I liked it and thought it was enjoyable to play, don't get me wrong, but to me it felt way too rushed as opposed to the first Mario Galaxy. It felt like Nintendo made SMG2 quickly because of the reception it got back when SMG was released. What was it Nintendo, 2 years?

One of the reasons it was in pale comparison to the other Mario games was of the absolutely terrible story-line. Don't try to tell me the "Oh, Mario doesn't need story so it doesn't matter" bullshit, Mario games generally had good story-lines and cutscenes, such as Super Mario Sunshine and SMG1, which both had pretty good ones, so my expectations were pretty high about this one. What do we get? Progression. Text box. Mario gets this. Princess is captured. Seriously, look up the beginning or ending of the game, and you'll see how terribly bland it is. It honestly gave me a less appealing sense of completion at the end of the game, and you'll see why.

I also found that set aside the shitty story-line, the game felt practically unchanged. The graphics were the same, the controls are the same, and the levels felt too similar to the ones in SMG1. I felt like I was replaying the Good Egg Galaxy in Sky Station Galaxy, and the boss... Seriously, anyone that played the game can understand that. The content they added seemed unbalanced in placement. Yoshi was a good addition to the game, but there needed to be a few more parts with him. The new power-ups were okay, but they felt few and far between to me. I remember using the drill ONCE in the game. Once. Maybe if they didn't reuse the same power-ups the new ones would get used more.

The game felt too linear as opposed to the first. The hub world was small, shitty, and pointless, where you could waste time getting lives that go away after you reset the game, or talking to characters that just say the same thing. The map was a bad idea, giving the player a more guided route as opposed to being able to do certain worlds in certain orders like you could in previous games. The linear map idea is something you would use in the New Super Mario Bros. Series or classic reboots, not changing the original SMG's working style. The levels themselves felt linear as well. The levels seemed like a "get from point A to point B" style and didn't really allow exploration or openness. This and the two-star missions made didn't allow me to follow connect or memorize most levels. Remember back in the first SMG when we could explore Honeyhive Galaxy? Or how in Super Mario Sunshine we got to run around Pianta Village looking for those goddamn red coins and watching everyone party? Don't expect that in this game.

I could go on and on about how the boss fights sucked, the music wasn't as memorable, or how the Green Star missions just turned be off from the game, but all I'm gonna say is that I enjoyed the game, but to me it's just a watered down version of the first game and doesn't even deserve the 10 out of 10 most critics give it.

RE: Most Overrated Games
The obvious choice is Call of Duty. It has become so boring, stale, and generic yet people still buy it... I wouldn't waste my money on yearly map packs nor should you.

Skyrim is another overrated game in my opinion. It was a good game overall, but great? No way.
Super Mario Galaxy is also overrated. I enjoy the game a lot at time and also get frustrated with it. Maybe it's those terribly fixed camera angles.
The last two Uncharted games, Mass Effect 3 (haven't played the first two), the last two Assassin's Creed games (ACR was terrible imo, while ACB was decent at best).

These seem to be the most overrated games at the moment, not of all time.

Btw, it's nice to see people being level-headed.

I believe COD(after 4) and Assassins Creed games are the most overrated. The only thing i like about those games are the story, everything else gets really boring.

RE: Most Overrated Games
Uncharted.

I get the appeal and all, a cool little 3rd person shooter/adventure platformer, but I don't really get it's appeal and I don't like it all that much, it's no different than any other 3rd person game, unless you count the 8 hours of cut scenes and such, I want to play it though.

Skyrim.

It's just a watered down version of Oblivion with a new map, it's nothing special, I don't get whey people think it's better than most RPG's and for that matter Fallout.

Babbyfield 3

It's just a CoD clone with destruction physics, GRAPHIXX, and vehicles, the game itself is nothing new, it has less of a variety than CoD, and the fanbase is pretty much the same, except it believes it's elitist and better than the other.

CoD 4

I get it, it was everyone's first CoD and therefore it wasn't popular and quick scoping wasn't around and that's why it was the best, and the series didn't go to shit until after, because I wouldn't be found playing a shit Cod game, so I make myself believe it was better than the others, and that's why it is better.

RE: Most Overrated Games
Maybe not the most overrated, but I have to say that Starcraft Brood War. It's seems like an odd choice, but within the starcraft community it seems to me that it's praised as the answer to all balance problems and issues present in Starcraft 2. There's people constantly complaining to Blizzard to make units more like they were in Brood War, or simply replace said unit with its Brood War counterpart to fix any and all problems.

The other issue I have with it is when it's praised as the most balanced game of all time and seen by some as a perfect game. When considering the success of each race, it is found that zerg win more tournaments than the other races, which are usually carried to victory by specific people (Bisu and Flash) while zerg have a greater variety of players.

It's not that I don't like the game, its just that I feel its obsessed over way too much by some people and is not the perfect game they believe it to be.
