Horror Games
Since our poll about your favorite VG genre completely omitted horror games Ima make a thread completely dedicated to them. Speak about your favorites and greatest experiences, whatevs! Or am I really the only person here who plays horror games?

I gotta say, it's definitely my favorite genre of video games. Point and click, sidescroller, 3rd person shooter... I don't really care, as long as it has the atmosphere and the story I'm all set. I've played or watched someone else play pretty much all the biggest names. There's a few I still need to get but all in all, I'd say I'm pretty well rounded.

RE: Horror Games
I either really like a horror game, or really despise it.

I really like horror games that emphasise atmosphere and uncertainty; that really play with your emotions.

I'm less of a fan of games where it just explodes enemies in your face to make you jump every five seconds.

I really like horror games that have it as a theme and not the mechanic. Dead Space for example has horrific scenes, dark symbolism and an awesome story. Being that it's in space you get that sense of being alone and that if you weren't alone, you're most likely standing next to a necromorph.

Slender on the hand isn't scary and looks like it's made in paint....

Some of the best I've played:
RE 1, 2, 3 and 4: But I was young so it was scary then, now it's laughable.
Silent Hill 1 and 2. I was young then but those games still have last after all these years. Better than RE
Condemned: Holy hell...Barts Department store after these years still burned into my head. D:
Fatal Frame/Project Zero (here in EU): Brilliant game mechanic that forces you to face the ghosts and take a picture of them.
Dead Space 1 and 2: One of the most well crafted games I've played this generation with amazing story telling.

RE: Horror Games
Horror games and I have mixed feelings, the current horror games are lacking in some aspects where the orignal titles of horror (Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, ect) had such great atmosphere but I think the controls also add to the horror. Like playing the original RE and AitD games were rather clunky in controls and when in a bad situation that can help add to the horror.

RE: Horror Games
While I don't play a lot of horror games I have to agree with Cody and SERIOUSLY, in that it's good when the atmosphere of the game is horrific and not things in the gameplay itself, because the atmosphere is always present but at the same time is in the background and out of your control and can just make a game very ominous, and kind of give the game a mysterious feel. RE4, (the only one I played) Dead Space 1 & 2, and Metroid Fusion, really capture this kind of atmosphere.

Now I will elaborate on Fusion because that game probably isn't really considered a horror game to most people, while I agree that the genre of the game isn't horror, it has horror elements in it because it was supposed to be one of the more mysterious and darker Metroid games. When I start that game up the music and dark lighting can really make me paranoid sometimes because it makes me feel like something is about to happen, but I don't know what, also the fact that for a large proportion of the game you feel helpless because you don't really have a whole lot to defeat any real threat that comes your way.

Some examples of perfect moments of this is, I am always scared of when that X infected defense robot comes into play, no matter how many times I play the game, because an area that was once intact is now destroyed, most every window broken, holes in the walls and floor, and you can see the robot flying around in the background, also the music is gone and instead all you have is this low humming that gets louder as the robot passes by because it's coming from the robot.

Also the SA-X is another thing that's terrifying in that game because there is literally nothing you can do to harm the thing until the end of the game but you come across it so many times and sometime are forced to run away from it, instead of just letting it pass by, not to mention they gave it the perfect atmosphere because whenever it enters all the music goes out and all you here is it's loud, slowly paced footsteps, until it spots you, which then triggers this panicky sounding music that only comes on when you're spotted by the SA-X, which of course put's you in a panic, because you know there's nothing you can do but run or die.

I really don't see Duke Nukem as a scary game but if you want games like that I would suggest go for Doom, Wolfenstein and Serious Sam.

I actually had not heard of Hotel 666 before. After a quick google search I am led to believe you are talking about this UDK Game Project. Seems pretty nice.

In any case, what consoles do you have or are you only playing on PC? That should narrow down the options Smile

Doom, Serious Sam and Wolfenstein are somewhat similar to Duke Nukem and all of them are available on PC. Then again, I'm assuming you're talking about the 3D FPS Duke Nukem games. That's right, right? Big Grin

I actually did a series of blogs about free horror games a while back. I'll link it to you right here. That should be enough to get you started Smile

RE: Horror Games
I've never really played a scary horror game, there have only been two games that have scared me shitless, and the was Metroid Fusion and Metal Gear Solid 2 which I both admire in high regard because of it.

I would love to play a horror game that is really scary though, but most of the suggestions are just jump scare games, or games that aren't scary at all or try to much to be and ruins the effect.

The only time I got a odd scare was in Halo 1, I was playing on a Flood Level and I was lost, I found some ammo and picked it up. I then saw a shotgun and wondered if I should pick it up or not. So when I finally picked it up, I turned around to a huge flood form standing there doing nothing. It shocked me for about 10 seconds, then I blew it's brains out.
