What do you think of emulators?

Currently I emulate PS1 games due to the fact I literally missed out on PS1 games.

I like the fact I can turn 240p pixelated games into HD 720p smoother and nicer looking games, currently I am playing Spyro, and believe me, the change is very nice.

You can make it look better, but this is the best my computer can handle, but in all due respect, the updated version looks like a Dreamcast/Gamecube game, which is pretty good, unfortunalty this picture came out blurry, it looks better in the emulator, since you can smooth textures, and changed the colours to be more vibrant.

I really only have an issue with pirating (emulating modern day games) on PC, but when they are shown in 1080p DAYUM! I love seeing Wii games in 1080p. Or even Dreamcast:

Older games meh. Companies can't make any money from (GBA etc) so why try? It's all used game sales now. I ended up modding my Wii to playing GBA, PS1, SNES, N64 and it can play Wii games from a USB (I prefer to have the physical copy which is why I don't torrent them).

Also good for speedrun practice.

I agree completely. The only reason I've bought older consoles and games is for collection purposes. Until I can buy a game for them, I emulate. People online sell old games for stupidly high prices, I found Mega Man X for no cheaper than 20 bucks.

I'm with you there. It's been a while I've been checking for original Pokemon Red and some N64 games (Majora's mask/Oot/MarioParty) but they insist on selling them for over 30~40 dollars (if my conversion isn't at all wrong).

Indeed same. I collect games and consoles. I recently bought Breath of Fire 2 for the Gameboy fully boxed. I didn't want to open it so I played it on my Wii using an emulator. Nintendo still can make money from those games though which is why they are available for download on the eShop. Having Minish Cap on the 3DS amongst a huge collection of (10)NES and (9 other) GBA games is awesome. But I still have the Zelda SP with the game.

That's how those games are now. An avid collector would spend that much on a game. Especially if it boxed with all the manuals and papers inside. Factory sealed game go for around £300+

Another good point about emulators is that you can build on the code. A about 2 years ago I downloaded the Project64 with Super Mario 64(I still own it), but a computer tool called ToadsTool. It basically allows you to edit the in game worlds and thus being able to create you own Mario stages or look at game programming (if you want to get into it). The same can be said for another tool I used to use call AdvanceMap. That tool was for modding Pokemon games (R/S/E).

You can see that the cheapest, used copy of Majora's mask is running for R$50 that is around 100 dollars. And it doesn't include the rumble pack or anything else. It's the game only.

Also that's true. There are a lot of people who would put an unboxed cartridge and try to get some chump to buy to it. The problem, is that, again the avid collector would know when they are being conned or not. So there's a reason these don't sell. The sellers assumes the potential buyer is an idiot. It might be a golden Majoras Mask cartridge but it's worth(less) without the box and other stuff. The average gamer who likes to collect games won't buy it because it's too expensive and your hardcore collector wouldn't spend that much money on a crappy condition game. Doesn't really work in the end.

Sellers like this are only kidding themselves.

That's ridiculous, something fun shouldn't be sold for so much profit. Think of the lost hours of joy !

Im british not american i know games Brand new and sealed that cost about £40 but i do look up to america and call it the home of gaming but not sure why it whould cost so much dollars its just wasting fun and money When i come to a higher age ill move to america and ill game to my hearts content!!!

It's Portuguese. R$ is Brazilian Real currency (Other countries also use their version of the dollar Zimbabwe Z$, Australia AUD and others).
So to convert that to R$ to pounds is:
First Zelda on he list:
£15.80.
Last Zelda on the list:
£35(ish)
Which means for us that's a bargain, but for them, it's not.

Japan is heart of gaming dude. Their arcade scene is still very much alive (and important)

Yeah those prices are ridiculous, I own that golden Majora's Mask cartridge and I wouldn't sell it for that, in fact I wouldn't sell it at all.

And that is when emulation comes in handy, when a game of a console that is dead in the market costs more than modern games.

I can't stand using emulators for a couple reasons.
1.Bad design.
-Now, this obviously doesn't apply to all emulators, but the majority of the ones I've used (or tried using), have had a terrible interface (I think Super Nintendo emulators take the cake on this). Just incredibly inconvenient to use, load roms, and just play the games.

2.Keyboard.
-I used to have an R4 for my DSLight, and it worked pretty well. But for the most part, emulators need to be played using the PC, which means a keyboard. And keyboards just weren't designed for the type of gaming I want to do on emulators (for the most part.) That, and the fact that I would, 99% of the time, prefer to use a controller over a keyboard any day.

But there may be hope. With the new console, OUYA, coming out, the obvious potential of emulators being run on it is great. And with everything I hate about emulators fixed (a good interface and a controller), this could potentially make me really like emulators. That is, if OUYA ends up being what it sets out to be (and I really hope it does well, because it looks like something really really great.)

Anyway, that's my 2¢ on emulators.

I have used a few good GBA and NDS emulators in the past, but playing handheld devices on a PC, using a keyboard just leaves a lot to be desired.

I mostly use emulators on old games I never got to finished. It really doesn't feel the same, but not finishing a really fun game feels worse.

Is it really that difficult to press "open" and then choose what game you want to play? I know zsnes is a bit odd, but snes9x is as simple as opening a document in word or a picture in paint.

I only use emulators for old unavailable games. New games i just buy if i realy want them.
