I still think my post rings true.

"There were many ideas for Sonic before he actually became Sonic; some original ideas were making him a bunny, fox, and dog. There was an internal contest in SEGA; the two choices that they narrowed it down to were an armadillo and a hedgehog."

He was only called "Mr. Needlemouse" after they had settled on making him a hedgehog.
