During his creation phase, Sonic The Hedgehog was originally planned to be known as "Ray the Flying Squirrel," then at another point as "Mighty Armadillo."
Both of these characters are playable in the Japan-exclusive arcade game, "SegaSonic The Hedgehog"

Mighty continued to appear in Sonic games. Ray, however, was not so lucky.
Which it seems they take part on another game of theirs that I don't remember the name
mighthy is used in knuckles chaotix or something :o togheter with the aligator and chameleon dude
and the bee
Let me tell you why that's bullshit.

Sonic was originally going to be called Mr Needlemouse, but when handed from Sega of Japan to Sega of America, they had to touch him up a little to make him appeal to kids, so they renamed him Sonic to match with his speed, and got rid of most of his porcipine like spikes.

Mighty the armadillo and Ray the flying squirrel were just designed to be Sonics followers (like Tails) in that SegaSonic arcade game in Japan.

I know my Sonic shit, Sonic Generations was going to be called "Project Needlemouse".

What a colourful post, both in language and otherwise.

If that's true, I must have been mistaken then. I was going off various wikis and youtube descriptions, so my sources weren't the most reliable.

sorry to come off as a dick
That design of mighty looks awesome tho
I still think my post rings true.

"There were many ideas for Sonic before he actually became Sonic; some original ideas were making him a bunny, fox, and dog. There was an internal contest in SEGA; the two choices that they narrowed it down to were an armadillo and a hedgehog."

He was only called "Mr. Needlemouse" after they had settled on making him a hedgehog.

I just want to mention that "needlemouse" could also be a literal translation of the japanese word for hedgehog, ハリネスミ (harinesumi).
During development Sonic was to have a girlfriend named Madonna but was scrapped for obvious reasons

Marble Zone was originally going to have UFO's in the sky, and if you wanna go way back, strange rotating platforms

This was an original DREAMS COME TRUE poster(They made Sonic the Hedgehogs music) that unveiled Sonic the Hedgehog to the world.

This was an early Concept art featuring Eggman in a Bumble-bee like constume, Madonna, and various unused enemies.

Probably the first iteration for Green Hill Zone

Apparently by then some of the enemies were in sprite form, this was one of the recently discovered screenshots.

Oh my god i think i got carried away, oh well, i've been dying to do this and since someone made a submit for a Did you know i wanted to post it here.
Those are some pretty cool facts and pictures.

Do you have any source for those? Like a site I could go to just for reference?
Either I'm blind or we forgot the Sonic the Hedgehog Band http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Band
One of the original concepts was a rabbit with stretchy ears that could pick up objects. While that idea was pushed aside for spinning in the air, it was later used in another Sonic Team developed game called Ristar.
