You didn't play Apollo Justice?
In that game you play as Apollo and discover Phoenix has become a bum and kicked out of the courtroom. Eventually you get to play the case that caused it and discover Phoenix was tricked into using forged evidence and thus barred. At the end of the game Phoenix proves his innocence finally and says he'll retake the exam to become a lawyer again, so AA5 has to take place after Apollo, although I'd prefer if the creators were like "OK, that game sucked. We're sorry. Pretend it doesn't exist."
I wonder why Maya isn't around, though? Maybe Phoenix used the boat ride they took with Pearl as an opportunity to drown that annoying bitch.
