I watched some of this and understood nothing - all I see are people gaming against one-another
Is this an international gaming tournament ?

It's what you said. A huge fighting game tournament where people all over the world come to compete. Just Street Fighter IV had 1500 contestants. They do this once a year to decide who is the best fighting player in a collection of games.
