The Koopa Kids were named after famous celebrities (mostly singers). They are:
Larry Koopa: Larry Mullen Jr. (Drummer for U2)
- There is another article from Official Nintendo Magazine claiming that Larry King was the real inspiration, but the Super Mario Wiki that claims otherwise uses a NoA employee as a source for that information, which is why I'm going with Larry Mullen Jr.
Morton Koopa Jr.: Morton Downey Jr. (Talk show host)
Wendy O. Koopa: Wendy O. Williams (Lead singer for The Plasmatics)
Iggy Koopa: Iggy Pop
Roy Koopa: Roy Orbison (thus the sunglasses)
Lemmy Koopa: Lemmy Kilmister (Lead singer and Bassist for Motorhead)
Ludwig von Koopa: Beethoven (thus the hair)
The names for each kid were changed in the Super Mario Bros. 3 TV show as well as the following Super Mario World. It's widely believed that DiC used the Japanese version of SMB 3 as a basis for creating their show, and as the kids weren't given official names until Super Mario World, had to make their own.
Also, my FAVORITE piece of info from the TV show. In the SHOUT Factory DVDs for SMB3, the Writer's Bible feature states Toadstool's age as 17.
