Mario was originaly going to be called Jumpman but while trying to think of a better name for the US release, Nintendo's US office was interupted by their landlord Mario Segale, after whom they christened the character.
I know the Jumpman and Mario Segale part is true but I dont think he interrupted their meeting, it had something to do with his personality if I remember correctly.
