if you take the word pikachu slit it to

Pika and

chu

in Japanese pika is a word for something shiny and chu is the word noise for mice like ours is squeak

More random trivia:
In Japanese, rai can mean next, lightning, or thunder.
Also, Pikachu is one of the only (may be the only) pokemon who's name is the same in every language.

also chimchar in Japanese is houkazerlu (h-or-oo-ka-zeh-rlu) zerlu is monkey in English and houka is arsonist
