Welcome to the former forums for DidYouKnowGaming?! In March of 2013, VGFacts was launched and this community was merged into the new forums there. These forums were originally taken offline at that time but I brought them back as an archive while transferring sites to the new server. Registrations and all interaction (posting, editing, moderation, etc.) are disabled but everything can still be read. If you're interested in joining the community, head on over to https://www.vgfacts.com/forums/ and join there but I've always thought it was important to preserve a site's roots so these forums will forever be available in this read-only state. Enjoy!

Where do you come from? What's in your blood?

I'm a unique one, I doubt we represent 1% of the population, but I'm Half Irish and Half Pakistani, I'm also White and live in London.

Believe me, if you saw me I doubt you'd think I was anything other than British.

Interesting question, I'm a mix of Nephalem and choboco, with the soul of a Dragon.
Now in a non-sarcastic answer, full Irish american here.

I'm part of that horribly oppressed part of the population that is white, middle-class, male and British. Man, has life been hard on me.

I'm white and a middle class American. In fact that's exactly what you would think if you saw me.

But I'm part Irish, German, and Scottish... that you would never guess. The curly brown hair and hazel eyes might be some kind of clue, though.

RE: What is your etnicity/background?
Here's a question for us whiteys ... do you take into account the specifics of your ethnic background when thinking about yourself? I only ask because it seems to be quite an American thing to be all "I'm American-Irish" or whatever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's bad, but it seems to be a bigger thing across the pond from me. Personally I'm English with an Irish background, but I don't feel like that informs my social identity at all. I don't feel Irish, I'm just a white guy who lives in the suburbs (which obviously may have a lot to do with it).

I wonder if it's better to have real sense of belonging to your heritage or to just be a "white guy". I can see advantages to both sides, though I'm obviously the latter.

(edit - I'm only talking about white guy stuff because I am a white guy. Don't worry, I'm not about to start yelling Merle Haggard lyrics or anything)

I think it's better to tell strangers you're white first, and then when you get to know them, tell them more.

I mean I told these guys straight away since we have a warning system and moderators, any racial offense is dealt with, but in real life, it's better to say something short and not to the point.

RE: What is your etnicity/background?
I am white but I believe to be part Irish and Scotish but I have no real proof of that other then what my parents said.
I do not know if I am middle class or not, I am 22 and live with my mom while I go through college. I do want to get my own place once I earn enough cash but for the time being I am doing just fine here, I help out around the house and take care of her (she is having surgery soon) so I feel that it is not embarrassing to admit this.

I'm kinda waiting for someone to join in who isn't white. This is a pretty interesting conversation, I think.

Also, I hope it goes okay with your mum. Keep us updated.

D'you reckon your ethnic background and appearance makes you feel like part of a certain group or something, or is it just noise?

I sound like some kind of intent research type. I'm asking this out of interest! Next up, gender differences. Haha, so, seriously, d'you think your ethnicity has informed your way of life?

I know that I'm VERY different from most of the people in my school and neighborhood. I'm one of the few asians (20 at the most?) in the school and everyone in my neighborhood is either white or black. And also my parents are Buddhist but I'm a Christian. (Weird, huh?)

RE: What is your etnicity/background?
I'm Brazilian, with some Portuguese, African and native blood (just like everybody in Brazil, I guess), but grandma's grandparents or grand-grandparents (not sure) were from Austria and Switzerland. My father made me be a little brown, though. Don't know his part of the family's origins. Probably African.

RE: What is your etnicity/background?
So d'you think when you take a summary of yourself as a person your ethnicity would have to be mentioned in order to explain who you are?

Again, I'm not being arsey, that's not a deliberately provocative question. I'm asking because I've never ever faced these kind of identity issues.
