What strikes me as odd is how people want to execute him even if he is considered "insane." That is not how we do things people, we do not kill people, REGARDLESS OF WHAT CRIME THEY COMMITTED, just on the grounds that they are insane. What he did was atrocious and I believe he should pay for his crimes but to execute him is not the best way to do it. To me when I hear people say that, it sounds similar to saying we should kill all special needs people because they are mentally retarded. Something that I highly doubt people would agree upon doing so would that make people hypocrites?

As you guys can tell by my username, I'm a pretty big anime fan. Why not make a thread to help contain it all in?

Truth me told actually, I recently just had a break from anime as there was a list of video games that I wanted to tackle, and decided that I could use a break from the medium and do something different. However, I have started watching some anime again and will hopefully catch up with the Winter shows I watch watching before I stopped.

At the moment, I recently started Katanagatari which has been quite a treat so far. It has a style that interests me and the animation is pretty fluid as it gives off this very "cool" vibe. Matched with an interesting mix of jazz and hip hop for part of the OST, it becomes very enjoyable to watch and listen to.

The characters themselves I quite like as the main two have some interesting chemistry and fun dialogue that I like between the two. One praise that I must give to one of the main characters is that even though he's sort of an idiot due to the fact that was isolated with only his family, they don't exaggerate on that one character trait and make it his whole character like some others shows do.

As far as manga goes, I tend to go off and read a couple chapters of Black Jack here and again. I love his morals and how he just isn't a "Help anyone for free!" type of main character. That matched with Tezuka's usually sillyness (though he is known to dive into dark works such as some of Black Jack and MW) with the other characters makes it a joy to read.

So what of you? Use this thread to talk about any anime/manga you're watching/reading, favorite anime/manga, etc.

In the early twentieth century, a Scottish farmer, came home and went by marshland. Suddenly, he heard cries for help. The farmer rushed to help and saw a boy who was sucked into the abyss of his creepy swamp slime. The boy was trying to get out of the terrible weight of marsh swamp, but his every move to sentence him to a quick death. The boy shouted. Despair and fear. Farmer quickly cut down the thick branch cautiously approached and handed branch saving a drowning man. The boy climbed to safety. Punched him trembling, he could not calm the tears, but most importantly he was saved!
- Come to my house, offered him a farmer. You need to calm down, drain and keep warm.
- No, no, the boy shook his head, waiting for my dad. He's very excited, I guess.
With thanks looking into the eyes of his savior, the boy ran away ...
In the morning, the farmer saw that drove up to his house rich coach and magnificent thoroughbreds. Stepped out of the carriage richly dressed gentleman and asked
- It's you last saved the life of my son?
- Yes, I said a farmer.
- How much do I owe you?
- Do not hurt me, sir. You do not owe anything to me because I did what had to do a normal person.
- No, I can not leave it just like that, because my son is very dear to me. Name any sum, insisted visitor.
- I do not want to say anything on this subject. Goodbye. The farmer turned to leave. And here on the porch ran his son.
- Is that your son? asked the rich guest.
- Yes, the farmer replied proudly, patting the boy on the head.
- Let's do so. I'll take your son with him to London, and will pay his education. If he is as noble, as his father, neither you nor I will not regret this decision.
Several years passed. Farmer's son graduated from high school, then the University of Medicine, and soon his name became world famous as the name of the man who discovered penicillin. His name was Alexander Flemming.
Before the war, in one of London's richest clinics enrolled with severe pneumonia son of the gentleman. Do you think that saved his life this time? Yes, penicillin, open Alexander Flemming.

So, I want to know if any of you have had a near death situation before. The reason I brought this up is because on my way home, I was crossing the street with one of my friends and I see a vehicle going straight towards us really fast, at that moment, I thought I was dead, but I managed to jump back in time. My friend was still in the middle of the street and frozen in shock, He swiftly managed to move out of the way of the vehicle. The person driving stopped AFTER we moved out the way. It was an old woman who was yelling at us saying it was OUR fault, when SHE clearly passed a red light.

So, any near death stories can go in this thread.

A thought, an item, a thing you do or an actual place. What is your go-to thing or location when you are feeling down or need some time to just be alone?

Starting from the weird end, I usually go to the cemetery, specifically my father's grave. Sitting around there usually clears my thoughts and in a place like that it's not likely anyone will bother you. When I'm moving away from this town I'll have to find a new cemetary to go to, though. Those places are just somehow so serene. Weird, as I was afraid to go there in the dark when I was a kid. Times, they change!

In summertime I used to go to the local beach by the river but nowadays it's just so overcrowded with teenagers I don't bother going there anymore. In the summer there's also a bridge under which I like to go to just look at the graffiti and water.

Those being actual places but I do tend to watch a lot of cartoons when I'm down, too. My Little Pony is a good one as the innocence of that just brings a smile to my face.

Kinda wish I had a cat.

The question sounds so syrupy you could stick your criticism to it but I'm asking it anyway because I like to know how people deal with things in their everyday life.

Fair use?

To what extent is copyrighted content actually available for fair use? I've seen videos and other projects getting taken down online when it sometimes is only for the smallest thing. I'll give you a couple of examples here from the last year, spanning from relatively obvious to absolutely ridiculous.

Some abridged series have been taken down on YouTube recently, which is kinda understandable since they are indeed using the original content on the video as the basis. One guy whose videos I follow managed to make a deal with YT where he is able to upload the episodes on his own channel IF he hosts them on his own website. He did that but I have no goddamn idea how that even works.

Fan games. Apparently it's dirty and wrong to make non-profit games from a copyrighted franchise, as the recent letters from Hasbro to makers of MLP games have proved. Even if the animations, programming, engine and basically the whole game has been created from scratch you still can't use characters and/or locations from a known franchise.

Fan animations. One of the more ridiculous examples to this is a Finnish guy who was making short parody animations, created with Paint and Movie maker, about the Moomin characters, even naming the whole thing "Tales from Hippovalley" and having ridiculous names on the characters. They all got taken down by the copyright owners, multiple times and from multiple accounts.

Now, this here is the rotten cherry to top it all off. Screwattack was unable to post new videos on YouTube for a while because one of their videos got flagged by CBS, the American TV network. The flagged video was an old news flash with a member, who hadn't even worked in the place in ages, making an impression of Horatio from CSI:Miami as an ending joke. Even joking is now apparently illegal. Fancy that.

Then there's the fact that you shouldn't even have a copyrighted song playing in the background on your video, even if it's coming from the radio etc. which in itself is total bullcrap.

I suppose I don't even have to remind anyone of the Megaupload fiasco.

Phew... Now that I got all of that off my mind, what is your opinion on all that?

I just watched Patlabor yesterday from an old VHS tape I bought recently. It's a Mamoru Oshii movie, you can guess the rest. It was pretty nice, way better than what I was expecting.

The Renunciation of Pope Benedict XVI

Before thinking "OH MY GOD CATOLIC S**TTY THREAD", just read everything, ok?
Well, everyone here probably know the Pope is renoucing(if you don 't, just google it in your language or click here). I'm not here to make a religious discussion(I'm not even sure about my own religious beliefs anyway), just wanna know what everyone thinks about the pope, the renunciation or both.
I think Benedict, differently from John Paul II, couldn't "attract" young people to Catholicism because of his statements about condoms, gay marriage etc etc and the scandals about pedophilia. It all made him look TOO conservative and un-charismatic.
I just hope Vatican chooses a not-so-polemic new pope, someone able to speak with the new generations.
