What makes a game a game?

I think that as long as it's digital and it's interactive, it's a videogame. If Dear Esther didn't put you in control of taking the protagonist from point A to point B then I would say it's not a game but just a digital movie, but that's not the case. Even the most minimalist games have some sort of player input. If there's a player involved, then you're talking about a videogame for sure.
