The pretty much nailed the formula, they just aren't doing anything with it.
New art style, new antagonist, new gameplay elements, don't revolve the game around certain powerups (NSMB Wii Ice Power & Propeller, SM3D Land Tanooki Suit, NSMB U Flying Squirrel, so it seems), stop handing out powerups like gifts on Christmas, etc. etc. etc. This is a good place to begin.
I want a new 2D Mario game, not another New Super Mario Bros. rehash.
I also want Shy Guy as a common enemy, I just really like him for some reason; maybe they can replace the Goombas for a game.
This is a very vague way to put it, but the current 2D Mario games are soul-less (Yes, I watch Game Grumps, but it's true.)
I dissagree with you here. Many mario games have a different graphic style and he mostly appears differently at times. Sure the voice may be
the same clips but which ever way he's quite different. Paper mario completely uses the paper visuals, mario and luigi series are more comical than the real ones.
I don't think Nintendo needs to change mario's appearence because it'll probably end up like how Sonic suffered.
I think it depends on how much they do with the same formula.
Paper Mario was just a graphic style on a sidercrolling RPG. Then they added the awesome paper transformations and 3D view to play from a different perspective and add a level of depth to the gameplay. Same with Super Mario galaxy which is a progression of the 3D platforming games.
But the simple side scrollers are old. NSMB fine, but how many times can you use the word New and retain the meaning after 4 NSMBs games?
The Nintendo series are too sacred to be critised. Skyward Sword being one of the most lacking titles recently.
Also, remember did give Tingle his own game...
