What was the myth the Legend of Zelda games was based on?

Each Zelda series references another Zelda game at some point.
For example, the Wind Waker opens telling of a story of a hero travelling through time, the Hero of Time. Which is the title Link is given in OoT(the first noting of this title in the timeline). All Zelda games(as to my knowledge) reference the previous Hero of Times accept for one (Which would be a spoiler if I said which one it was-ish).
