I recommend any on DS (or other platform they appear on). Another Code, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk.
Phoenix Wright is probably the best visual novel I've ever played.
On Xbox:
Steins;Gate. Robotics;note I havne't downloaded yet but looks promising
I haven't gotten around to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/ (When They Cry).
Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk. Can they be labeled as visual novels? I'd classify them only as adventures. I mean, I'm no expert about visual novels, but those games are closer from, like, Lucasarts' adventures then traditional do-nothing-but-dialogue-trees japanese visual novels, right?
Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk and two games I've put very firmly into the visual novel genre. Another Code and Professor Layton I'd consider visual novels but also can be part of puzzle adventure. Even if I'm wrong about the them being visual novel, they're still very good games regardless.
I haven't played Katawa Shoujo. I guess it's good?
