I recommend any on DS (or other platform they appear on). Another Code, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk.
Phoenix Wright is probably the best visual novel I've ever played.
On Xbox:
Steins;Gate. Robotics;note I havne't downloaded yet but looks promising
I haven't gotten around to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/ (When They Cry).
I've actually been waiting for an English translation for Steins;Gate and I've taken a look and Higurashi no Naku ni but it seemed a little stereo typical for my taste (in other words your typical love story visual novel. Also don't get me wrong those are good but if it's too predictable and stereo typical I just get bored I mean hell I freaking loved Clannad and I'm really enjoying Little Busters! [the one I am currently reading] and it appears I've went off on a tangent) I'll have to check out Robotics;Note, it looks like it's from the same people that made Steins;Gate (judging by the title stylization).
Also a recommendation of my own is Fate/stay night. (just a little warning there are 18+ scenes in this one. Also before anyone gets the wrong idea I don't read these for that. )
I haven't played Higurashi no Naku ni but I enjoyed the anime. I liked it because it was cutesy girls (ugh) but with murder and (a bit of gore). I personally find Clannad as stereotypical as everything I don't like about these "cutesyschoolgirl' animes. Steins;Gate is good because it's features likable characters who are young adults.
LittleBusters looks OKish, but the characters ... I gight get it on PS3 if I find it cheap (not on Xbox 360 y'see).
Like I said before though, if you want strong decent Visual Novels, those 4 DS games are the best!
