Threaded Mode | Linear Mode

I'm not after the ol' classics like Dig Dug or Contra or whatnot. I'm thinking more about stuff from a generation or so ago that are still playable and...well... recognisably 'modern'. I've noticed many people on here loving Spiderman 2, which I never played. Would it still hold up today? Any other recommendations?

I remember having loads of fun with Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick, for example. I think there's enough there for a re-release as an Xbox download.

EDIT - screw the "generation ago" thing. Anything you think is still kind of modern-ish, whatever.

Spiderman 1 and 2 for PS2, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine.

Well... I raised the question mainly as a conversation point, really. So I'm reluctant to limit it to particular genres. But it is something I'm interested in, so feel free to mention whatever you loved. Go nuts, fellah. I'll look into any games mentioned and if they interest me I'll give them a go where possible.

I think those games are great classics that can hold out pretty well even today. There are some games like Billy Hatcher and Baiten Kaitos which are great but may not have the appeal anymore.

Others:
All of those HD Collections (MGS, DMC, GoW, SH etc) <- prove those games still hold out today.
Shenmue??? <- It really depends on the player to see if stands the test of time

I find that games of the fun sports/fun racing/sim and fighting genre survive the best because it's not about the graphics but the mechanics of the game. Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, SF3: 3S/MvC2, Populous for example...

Some genres evolve over time. Look at how the FPS genre evolved
Wolfenstein > Doom/ > Goldeneye/Quake(PC FPS)> Timesplitters/Metroid > CoD
Notable differences such as, Health pickups being replaced by (irritating) screen turning red. No weapon pick ups. Multiplayer game modes. But a game series like Zelda doesn't need to evolve.

Super Mario 64
One of those ZOMG epic games with crappy 3D models. One of those rare times where EVERYONE said "screw the graphics, this game rocks!"

OT: If we are talking about a generation ago then that would limit things to PS2, Xbox, GBA/GBSP, Gamecube and I would THINK Dreamcast as well.
There were SO MANY PS2 titles that I would consider outdated like Indigo Prophecies.
Xbox on the other hand I have like 5 Xbox games so I will leave that up to someone who has played the Xbox more then I have but MAYBE something like Max Payne?
GBA/SP: Again I do not have many so I will omit my choice because I really do not HAVE one.
Gamecube: I will say something like Luigi's Mansion or Pikmin.
Dreamcast: I only have 4 games and one is a Dreamcast demo so I omit my choice on that.

Yeah, just edited that and made it suitably vague. I'm not overly fussed about keeping it generation-specific, so long as it goes along with the general spirit of what I meant.

I just remembered the Syphon Filter games. I had a blast with them. I'd love a reboot of that series.

WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED Baten Kaitos Origins FOR THE GAMECUBE YET?!? That is the best RPG game I have ever played, hands down...albeit a little obscure of a game to find, but if you play it you will not regret it.

For PS2: Ty the Tasmanian Tiger series, Destroy All Humans 1 and 2, Jak series, Sly Cooper series, Radiata Story( A little obscure, but a great RPG), and Ratchet and Clank series.

For PS1: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Tomba.

For GBA: Megaman BattleNetwork Series and Pokemon

I tried to not go with really popular series and I wasn't to sure what to do for N64 and Gamecube other than Banjo Kazooie, Mario, and Zelda. I was considering saying Extreme G or Snowboard kids. But other than F Zero their isn't many classic racing style games.

PS1, Bushido Blade. I fucking loved that game. I still hope that in about 15yrs time it'll be recognised as a classic.

Sorry for not seeing that I missed it also the name was spelled wrong so my search didn't pick it up so I could be sure before I posted that, but yeah I bought a used copy for like 10 bucks from amazon like a year ago after having the urge to play it again and have not regretted it one bit. Also you have great taste in games sir.

It would be a crime not to mention Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age for the GBA. They're my favorite games of all time and are worth a try for anyone who likes RPGs.

Well, I think that Rayman 3 is one of them. As a kid, it was a really cool game, and right now, even if it's not the BEST graphics, they're are still good looking ^_^

Plus, the story is awesome! At the starts of the game, Rayman learn how to use his powers... by an in-game manual! (It's true ^_^) What originality!

The original Mario and Luigi, Superstar Saga for the GBA (it's 10 years old now) and Super Smash Bros. Melee, both great additions to already awesome series, and each one gave Mario a giant hammer.

Threaded Mode \| Linear Mode Not classic yet, but out-dated.
