What do you think of emulators?
So I've been wondering for a while and it has been bothering me whether is good or bad to use emulators.

I'm just asking for opinions really.

Here's my opinion: Emulators are like a trump card, if there's no other choice and you have the ability and technology to use 'em, then just use 'em.

I also play legit consoles, with cartridge/CD games, just wondering what do you guys think of them.

I use them for games where I know there's no way to keep the right people profit, or when the original game has become terribly overpriced. Or wasn't released where I live.

Yeah, I've always wanted a SNES console but it's way overpriced and not to mention the games.. people think they can make that kind of profit by selling old, used games.

Overrated why? Keepin' it on the console is awesome too, has a nice feel to it Tongue

You actually can play Wii games in HD on Dolphin, which is impossible in an actual Wii console. But that's a rare case of an emulator outmatching the videogame it emulates.

I like emulators because videogames are too expensive here. I'm forced into remain solely a PC gamer, but many of the most awesome games don't have PC versions, so the only way I can dream of playing them is by emulating.

Once I even considered to buy the necessary to perfectly emulate a Wii (controller, sensors, bluetooth adapter... Still cheaper than a Wii).

But my real emulation times are long gone, though. Today I my games list on Steam absorbs all of me. =P

Another alternative, if you have a Wii, is to do a nice HomeBrew and you can install emulators on your Wii.

For me, it has a nicer feel than the PC emulators because I can use my Wii Classic controller, which replicates the SNES controller but with added analog sticks

RE: What do you think of emulators?
I use emulators mostly for portable games, just because it's a bit harder to come by the device and it's charger for proper cheap, and most of the time they're poor quality. I also use emulators for older games I want to buy, but don't have any money for, mostly N64.

RE: What do you think of emulators?
I never actually really use them. Probably doesn't help that my computer's crap and some of the games run like crap. Which is weird because all the games I would play are so old so they really shouldn't be a problem.

That is why right now I'm favoring my Wii running emulators, they run like a charm. I won't do much gaming until I upgrade my PC.. someday...

RE: What do you think of emulators?
I enjoy the original feel of games, so that's why I own and sometimes collect titles for classic consoles. However from a purely technical standpoint, when I tape shows that require video game footage I tend to use the Wii to emulate all systems from the SNES/Genesis era and prior. It's just easier that way, especially since some older systems, like the Atari 2600, do not have standard RCA composite ports without directly modding the console.

I agree with your original sentiment of "last resort" in a sense. If you don't own the original and you have no suitable and practical means of obtaining a legitimate copy, then emulators are okay.

Also, savestates.

True that. Savestates are an advantage, but are kind of cheap.. I used to use savestates if I mess up, but now thinking it does ruin the challenge. So now I tendo not to use them, just to get a nice feeling.

But yeah, the Wii is pretty awesome with emulating.

RE: What do you think of emulators?
I use them for a few things:
1. Old games I couldn't get my hands on or the developer would have no way of making money with, this essentially translates into GBA and SNES backwards, although I still have my GBA with Pokemon Leaf Green on me at all times... just in case Boner is feeling lonely. Boner is my Marowhak by the way
(teehee, Whack... just noticed that)
2. In school when I typically can't whip out my gameboy, usually during study hall or after I finish me work, I just keep a bunch of old ROMS on my flash drive and pop it in.
3. Old consoles I don't own: Sega Genesis and NES mainly, it's just a lot easier than going on eBay and finding all of the old crap, again with no way of the company or developers making any money off of it.
