Madonna was supposed to be a love interest for Sonic back when the original game was still in development. She was a blonde haired skinny human woman in a form-fitting red dress and was actually going to be Sonic's girlfriend. However, she was scrapped from the final game, along with other things that were to be in the story (like Sonic being in a rockband).
She was supposed to chase Sonic around like Amy Rose does in current games. She was first designed by Hirokazu Yasuhara, as a very attractive woman who would chase Sonic. She was later removed by Madeline Schroeder, her reason for removing Madonna was that she wanted to "soften" Sonic for children and foreign countries, because she thought it was too "Japanese". Madonna can also be considered the equivalent of Pauline in the original Mario game, Donkey Kong.

I came in here and was going to make a joke at the expense of a friend but then I remembered she isn't registered here so I will instead acknowledge her existence in this post and then link her on Facebook. XD

That is part of the reason why modern Sonic should've said "Enjoy your future, but just be sure to get totally hammered around 2006" in Generations's ending.

I never played this one, but my friend is obsessed with Sonic; I thought for sure I'd of heard of this from her whining about everything wrong with sonic games of today by now

It wasn't until meetings with Sega of America where they were all "wtf is this shit" that sonic had the mostly for the better redesign, far as I know Sega of japan wasn't happy but the plan worked in the end

If I remember correctly Sega was quoted as saying some bullshit statement with sonic 06 before it was released about "we are bringing Sonic back to his roots" possibly a reference to the original concept? or maybe referencing Madonna?

More likely I'm reading too much into this, but it would be funny if I was right. Behind closed doors I'm sure there would have been a conversation like this after Sonic 06 bombed:

Sega America: So... you just couldn't let it go could you

Sega Japan: I have no idea what you're talking about

Sega America: Don't bullshit me the madonna thing! Well now you kinda got your way who was right?

Sega Japan: you...

Sega America: and who was wrong?

Sega Japan: me?

Sega America: Exactly... now lets never speak of this again...
