Pokemon simply because it's the same formula people seem to love using on the Call of Duty series, "Same game, different weapons".

RE: Most Overrated Games - Mr.Holmes - 06-26-2012 10:35 AM

Call of Duty, mainly because of the fan base.

By looking at the posts, I think we can conclude that almost everyone thinks that COD and Pokemon are overrated games.

I never got why keeping a formula for a sequel is such a bad thing as long as it's done right. Why would you buy a sequel for any other reason than wanting more of what you just played, but with different content? I'd be disappointed if I bought a sequel for a game and they changed it completely since I loved they did before so much. If I wanted something totally different, I'd probably just buy another game.

For me Pokemon and Mega Man (classic) has always been good examples of how to create sequels while keeping the same forumla. Mega Man kept it the same but with just new stages to master, because that's what fans wanted. When they wanted to change Mega Man in anyway they just started another series (Legends, X, Battle Network). This is exactly how you should keep a game series going. If you can't keep the formula fresh, just stop doing that series.

As I just mentioned, Pokemon is another good example. When they create another game in the series they make A LOT of new content. Every game has been bigger than the generation before and there has always been a bunch of new stuff to explore, while keeping the same old formula of catching pokemon and plowing your way through the gyms and E4.

As for COD, I can't say much since I haven't played them. As far as I know they just made another game with the exactly same gameplay engine as MW2, which is pretty terrible considering the huge gap in the release of the games. But as I said, I haven't played them.

Gotta hand it to you guys. Thank you for keeping it civil. No meme bullshit nor name-calling as far as I could tell.

That's a high-five, by the way

You sir make a very good point.

But I think it's mostly to do with what's popular on the internet, Call of Duty seems to be a popular "if he/she likes it flame them" subject. But to be honest if the game is fun it shouldn't really matter how it's executed.

Call of Duty is sort of a Given, but personally I am sick of Mass Effect. I just never caught on, the gameplay is too stale for a shooter, and not nearly strategic enough for an RPG. I don't even know what to say about it, I just hate that series...

I like Mass Effect, but I can absolutely see what you mean.

It kind of teeters inbetween action and RPG without being very good at either. I thought 3 might have moved to a more action based gameplay, but it stayed in the same formulaic style.

I liked the series, but that's because I didn't really put a lot in to it and it's lore. And everyone crying about the ending to the series kind of turned me off from a lot of the fanbase.

Minecraft. No reason I can put my finger on. I just don't "get it".

Even though I'm a fan of the game I have to admit that's a fairly good reason. If you don't get "it" you will feel that the game is very overrated.

I know I will probably get a lot of hate for this, but, the original Resident Evil games...

Although I love the premise, I think it was just executed badly, I actually prefer Resi 4 over the originals... *hides*

I don't mean to hate on you or flame on your opinion, but RE4 kicked off because of the original RE games. Smile

RE4 = Good, RE5 = Overrated, RE6 = I hope they bring back the horror/survival feel of Resident evil.

@topic: D3 is pretty overrated, right?

I see what you mean by you dont get it, it took me a month just to realize that you need diamond to collect obsidion, but minecraft is a game where you build massive super stuctures and fight monsters (unless you play on peaceful)

And most overrated game for me is Call of Duty, its the only game I have played where I have been both had my mother insulted, called gay, and since i didnt go to the midnight release everyone was ages ahead of me in levels
