Is anyone a reader here? - PikaPikari - 07-07-2012 05:12 AM

Like..books...not the comic kind (even though I love those as well)

I have to read a few books over the summer for school and I was wondering if anyone has read them and knows if they are any good?

-Brighton Rock by Graham Greene
-1984 by George Orwell
-The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli
-The Utopia by Sir Thomas More
-Moby Dick by Herman Melville

yeah, as we are on the topic of books...what's your favorite and such? I love The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald! Smile

I don't read as much books as I would like to. When I do read it most of the time ends up being Haruki Murakami, but I think I might catch up to him soon.

All of those are good apart from Moby Dick (in my opinion anyway), it just kind of reads like a whaling manual.

I like reading Jules Verne's work, that guy was way ahead of his time

Yeah, thankfully my coach (I'm on the academic team) told me that I can skip the whaling chapters of moby dick because...they are not going to ask about whaling in a question xD

Lucky. Whaling is, funnily enough, not gripping reading material.

I've stumbled across Andrey Kurkov recently. Thoroughly recommend him. Strikes me as a bit similar to Haruki Murakami (in a good way, not a derivative way).

Also, everyone should read The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Top notch book.

I read some manga but thats kinda it Tongue

Whaling doesn't sound like fun >.>
I'll check the other books out..I don't know if I'll have much time to read much of anything else since I have to read these 5 books as well.

Ohh manga..I've read a lot of Fruits Basket, some of Kingdom Hearts, and one book of Soul Eater.

I probably read more than I do any other leisure activity. I'm always willing to talk books. Lemme know what you think to those books when you get round to them.

1984 is probably one of the only books I actually read along with in class and read actively when it was assigned as homework. It's great novel. Kind of slow paced, and it's intense, but within the right mind set.

Oh okay! I'm glad it's a good book, I have heard only great about it.
Right now I am reading Brighton Rock...the beginning seems a little confusing to me but maybe that is the point: to get my questions about Hale answered later on.

I enjoy a good book, but I tend not to read on my own unless I'm in school. I do very much enjoy visual novels though, to explain what that is, it's basically a book on my computer that I make choices in, which of course determines the outcome...kinda like those old Choose Your own Adventure books but with an actual story instead of just being a kids thing. Smile

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention even though it's kinda obvious, there are pictures.

(I'm actually in the middle of reading one, just checking up on the forums) Wink

haha! Some of the anime I watch are based off of visual novels. I've never tried one..but it's something I want to look into.
