I don't have any particular position in this.... but wherever you work, how can you tell that consoles are dying? There haven't been any new ones released for ages. Are you saying that consoles from 2006 aren't selling very well anymore?
People aren't buying them like they used to. They prefer gaming on tablets/smartphones since it's all connected and they don't need anything extra, plus they can take their tablets/phones with them wherever they go as opposed to an Xbox or any other TV console.

Sales in all gaming consoles have slowly started dying over the last few years. Would that not be because there are no really new consoles out there at the moment apart from the 3DS which was overpriced and under-advertised? I'm not arguing that people like mobile gaming, but it seems a bit... er, presumptuous to say that consoles are dead. How's the PlayBook doing vs the DS, for example?

Yes. Same here. Everything's going portable now, it's all about those smart phones, tablets, making your world "connected..." ..it's what consumers want now. I work for the largest consumer electronics retailer in the US (BB) and believe me when I say that is where the trends are going, I know exactly what I'm talking about. Consoles seem to be going in the same direction the desktop, laptop, and short-lived netbook are going in.

People are starting to want that connected world so they don't have millions of things to keep up with, so if everything is in one device it is easier, and believe me I've had customers say that. The console may not be dying nearly as fast, but it has declined a little over the last few years.

Gaming itself isn't dying, it's in full swing and growing. It's the consoles that are.

I for one am not very opposed to this while I love my consoles I would love even more if the golden days of portable gaming came back and I would once again be able to play a great big budget game that has blood sweat and tears poured into it by the developers while also not having to be hold up at the TV, I miss those day and would strongly welcome a return of them.

I find the current "Rise of the Handhelds" very annoying.
Video game developers still have many sequels, spin-offs, and other expected items to be released.

But I also realize that the "market" is specifically aimed for the "average consumer"
So sadly, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo aren't worried about the hardcore dedicated fans like us, because we simply aren't substantial in numbers.

They're focused on the vast number of "casual consumers" out there.

In other words, they want the "video game virgins" and "average joes".

The industry has grown tremendously, and I think this generation is the actual "Gamer"'s time to take a seat for a short while....maybe longer.

Man, it's weird, I disagree with almost everything you said.

The "rise of the handhelds" was amazing for me when I first played a Siphon Filter game on the PSP! (also, a lot of DS games on the DSi).

I've asked before and I'll ask again... what constitutes a hardcore gamer?

A Hardcore Gamer is someone who puts many hours into video games or who has became an expert in atleast a game or two.

A Hardcore Gamer is someone who puts many hours into video games or who has became an expert in atleast a game or two.

And what constitutes a casual gamer?

Well the definition for "casual" from Dictionary.com is 'without definite or serious intention'

So i'm inferring that a casual gamer is one who plays video games occasionally for OCCASIONAL enjoyment.

In contrast to those who spend alot of their free time playing video games because it's something they love to do.

Shit, I do both.

I'm not saying they're dead, I'm saying they're dying. It's not because of there not being new ones either. The 3DS was never a huge hit. It had it's heyday when it first came out like every other console, but it's sales have slumped too and it never surpassed regular consoles. Smartphones and tablets on the other hand are rising rapidly. Sales in games for the smartphone and tablet platform are skyrocketing as well. The numbers don't lie.

So is this an official prediction that the the Wii U, for example, will be a huge flop?
