Sonic the Hedgehog was the first video game character to be featured in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. That year a few of the balloons were damaged due to strong winds, with the Sonic balloon being one of those that were damaged. A child and a police officer were injured because of the Sonic Balloon.
