Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Mass Distraction - 01-14-2013 08:23 AM We have lately been getting a whole lot of reboots and HD ports of games, leaving some wanting full remakes and/or fresh starts while others are content with what we get. This actually spun a discussion on another forum that lead me to wondering what people actually prefer. Basic Rerelease - An upgraded port, a director's cut or an upgraded version that gives us the same game as the original but with additional content not available in the initial release. Examples: Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Metal Slug X, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 HD Upgrade - An upscaled and smoothed out version of the original that is just a whole lot prettier. Nothing changed, graphically more pleasing. Examples: Resident Evil Revival Selection, Sonic Adventure 2 HD Remake - A full-body upgrade in latest gen with no added content aside from possible online components and better gameplay. Looks and sounds prettier. Examples: Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Cave Story 3D Full Remake - A complete remake of the game in latest gen with added content like exculsive story elements, additional game modes and/or upgraded character roster. Examples: Resident Evil Remake, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, Corpse Party: Blood Covered Repeated Fear Reimagining - A complete overhaul on the game's story and characters while still retaining the original plot to some extent. Examples: Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Organ Trail Reboot - A complete rework on the whole series, starting from the ground up. Usually retains basic plot elements, characters and common themes but completely ignores the storyline from previous games. Examples: Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider Demake - More of a comedic touch but hey, some people like it old. A conversion of a game to an older format, usually replacing 3D graphics with pixel graphics. Examples: Resident Evil (NES), Super Smash Land, Halo 2600 RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Arjahn - 01-14-2013 09:13 AM I honestly don't care too much for releases, would prefer if they'd just spend time making a quality new iteration in the series (But we can't have that, can we); but Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix was great, it added new bosses, new difficulty, new items and a crap ton of both new post-game content and fan service. Oh, and it added hats, which is a plus for any avid TF2 fan. RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Zaliphone - 01-14-2013 09:22 AM I much prefer HD rereleases over any others. Because a PS3 can't play PS2 games, it allows me to easily gather games that I never played or absolutely loved. And as an added bonus it's in pretty HD! RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - TheRealJDawgz - 01-14-2013 09:25 AM I think a full remake is the best way to retell a certain story of a game while adding a load of new elements. It makes you feel like you are replaying a game that you love, while it gives you so many new elements that it feels like you are playing a completely new game. It also gives the game a chance to redeem itself at certain points at certain points where it was lacking. Then again, the phrase goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," so it really depends. OoT 3D felt like it was an HD remake for the newer generation to experience the game in a better style. The game never caught my attention on the N64, but I loved it when I played it on the 3DS and it encouraged me to try out other Zelda titles. RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Lightmatt - 01-14-2013 09:53 AM I think it depends on the game being re-released. HD upgrades can work for some games just fine (Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection), others might need a complete rework. RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - SERIOUSLY THOUGH - 01-14-2013 10:03 AM This all depends on the game. There are games that I would love to see re-released in their original form, some I'd prefer remade in HD, some I'd prefer re-done to fix any flaws with the original, etc. RE: Rereleases. Also you forgot when games are ported, such as Metal Gear Solid 3. RE: Rereleases. That is included in "Basic Rerelease" as they usually add some minor stuff in later ports, resulting in an upgraded port. Is the new DMC really that bad? I don't really see the upcoming Tomb Raider game being horrible either. I definitely would want a reboot of something like, say, Dino Crisis. RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Xannidel - 01-15-2013 03:14 AM Depends on the game and how old the game is. When Resident Evil 1 was remade for the Gamecube they not only added better voice actors but new enemies and puzzles and scenery areas. That is what I feel a remake should include. Other remakes like the Sly Cooper HD collection did their job just fine. One collection that I am sure has had nothing but negative reception right now is the HD collection for Silent Hill. That is one that I think should have been worked on longer to include SH1. RE: Rereleases. What do you prefer? - Fawkesdye - 01-15-2013 03:14 AM Complete remakes are pretty awesome. Loved the RE1 remake, and I'd prefer experiencing older games with completely upgraded environments and gameplay mechanics, to playing the exact same game with a slightly upgraded resolution. I also think rehashes should be illegal. I hate knowing that to play any capcom game to the fullest, it's going to take a year and 3 full priced releases to do so. RE: Rereleases.
