Naming Your Characters - Hexadecimal - 09-08-2012 11:41 AM

I was just wondering if, when the option is given, you put any special thought into what names you give your characters? I'm assuming a lot of the men in this forum will say they give their name, but since girls aren't frequently MCs, and even rarer still have a name option, I have a little theme going.

These are mostly for MegaTen related games. Since there's been so many, and it's been awhile, I can't recall which went to which. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to guess where my inspiration came from.

Maddox Hatter
Chester Katt
Martin Hare
Lewis Carroll
John Tenniel
Harold White
Jervis Tetch

Even if a name option is there, though, if the character is given a name in the instructions I will select that. It felt weird you could name Link something else in OOT. The only time I have ever used my name was for the female MC in Persona 3 PSP.

RE: Naming Your Characters - SERIOUSLY THOUGH - 09-08-2012 11:43 AM

I'm really boring and just use my real name most of the time (though not in online games) Cool

RE: Naming Your Characters - Zaliphone - 09-08-2012 12:55 PM

I'm probably the most original guy ever. I use...wait for it........Zaliphone.
Always. Zaliphone.
Although I have used variations as puns. Name your custom class in Oblivion? Zalipwner.

My name on here is the same for all the other online handles I use in games and what not.

Depends. If it's a human or 'close-to-human' like a vampire or elf, I use either Arthur or Christopher, as those are the names of the two characters who always show up in any of my written work. I guess that can be seen as boring to some people, but whatever. Also, if the character is not human looking, I use either Alistair, Kahrel, or Thanatos (yes, that name does come from the Greek god, because I love Greek mythology).

I use the name Vikkael (similar to michael). It's the name of my novels main character and hero.

Like, in a game where we name our characters?

Yeah, it's never my name.

Like in Skyrim. The first character was a human nord. And that character was a female. Her name was Mady.

My second character is a khajiit. I named him Fluffy.

My profile in Majora's Mask was named Tobuscus.

It's really whatever I feel at the time.

RE: Naming Your Characters - Symphony - 09-08-2012 10:21 PM

I usually go for defaults, if they're available. Because naming a character and finding out it doesn't really fit into the dialogues as well as the default is just game-breaking for me.
If there ain't any defaults, I'm going for Kiel.

I never named my Pokemon during the 90's. Due to the limitations of the game it was
Articuno [Image: 6589D.png] Frosticles
Moltres. [Image: 6589D.png] Phoenix
Zapdos. [Image: 6589D.png] Pylon

Yeah but with those nicknames who is who!?
Thankfully as technology progressed they have their own individual mini sprites.

I never named Link or Epona anything other than Link or Epona, UNLESS I was doing a speedrun or just felt like being rude.
Saria: "Hey, Im a dick"
"Link you've tamed your vagina"

Games like WoW or Demons/Dark Souls I just make up some random name like Firetruck, Lemon or anything I see in my room.

RE: Naming Your Characters - Moriatti - 09-09-2012 02:29 PM

Moriatti, Vance and "I say, I say"

RE: Naming Your Characters - Kai - 09-10-2012 08:44 AM

I usually try to come up with a unique name and if I like it I'll stick with it for the whole series.

RE: Naming Your Characters - retrolinkx - 09-10-2012 09:07 AM

Any game: My Real Name.

Any game that I have to show off (video wise): Retro.

RE: Naming Your Characters - BasilZero - 09-12-2012 02:54 AM

I usually use my name "Basil" or "BasilZero"

I also go by the names of "BasilCulex" sometimes as well.

In MMORPGs and in my latest playthrough videos of Final Fantasy 1 DoS, I use the names "Elyon" and "Elenia" which are two names I usually use for a male character and the other for a female character.

RE: Naming Your Characters - De Los Cielos - 09-12-2012 03:11 AM

Most people have always found this strange, but I've been naming my characters after famous scientists/physicists/philosophers. My roster always looks something like:

Neils Bohr
Francis Bacon
Felix Savart

It's stranger too because most people recognize the names, or at the least have heard the names before.. But don't exactly know who the person is. There's some names I give them where I don't even know who the person is or what their contribution to science was haha.

It started as a placeholder I guess.. I kind of just "needed a name" so I threw one out there, and I've been following the pattern ever since

RE: Naming Your Characters - Zaliphone - 09-12-2012 06:28 AM

I've always liked the name Francis Bacon. That's a pretty cool thing you're doing.
