Classic Online Strategy Games - tohapply - 09-03-2012 04:09 PM As a fan of online strategy games and have been playing many of them, there are some classic ones that are still strong among new games emerge in endlessly. 1. Travian Official Site: http://www.travian.com/ Travian was originally released in 2004 by a German team and quickly gained an international following. Today, the game is available in over 40 languages and has over 250 servers worldwide servicing 5+ million players. While the gameplay mechanics are similar to another German browser based strategy game, Tribal Wars, the two now offer very different gaming experiences. The most recent version of Travian (version 3) was released in 2006 and offers several new features including heroes, higher building level caps, and the ability to annex oases territories which previously only served a visual purpose. 2. Tribal Wars Official Site: http://www.tribalwars.net/ TribalWars is a browser based game and was released in 2003 as a text based game. The game is currently one of the most popular browser games in the world, ranking among the top ten in number of players. There are over 34 million registered users. Tribal Wars is exactly as the name suggests – an all out war between various ‘tribes’ and clans in a free to play web MMO. Every individual controls a village, and must struggle to expand it in order to survive. Set in the medieval ages, it is through the sword, shield and bow that each player will set out to conquer another – in real time. 3. Grepolis Official Site: http://en.grepolis.com/ Grepolis is the third browser based MMO release by the German studio InnoGames. Like their flagship title, Tribal Wars, Grepolis is a strategy game where players start with a single city and build it into a sprawling empire. The setting this time is not medieval Europe but the cradle of Western civilization, ancient Greece. RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - Symphony - 09-03-2012 08:37 PM The thing with online browser games like those you pointed is that you almost always need premium content to play properly. And that 'premium content' might range from 'energy/stamina/that-thing-you-need-to-do-stuff' to 'if you have this you win' stuff. And that just pisses me off. Whenever I try a browser game, the first thing I check is if there's a freaking energy bar. If there is, I simply quit. This is exactly my opinion about browser games. Also, most of these games you enlisted have fairly bad mechanics and playstyle and aren't so well developed. Considering it costs real money to get good stuff, it's a possible waste of time and budget. RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - SERIOUSLY THOUGH - 09-04-2012 01:22 AM I used to play Runescape... then they brought in those member-only shenanigans and I just thought "fuck that". Also, when I go back and think about it, it was basically a click-die game. Look an enemy *click*, he's dead. How and why did I ever find that amusing EDIT - Forgot to mention that the "strategy" part of Runescape was almost non-existant RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - Xannidel - 09-04-2012 02:19 AM (09-04-2012 01:22 AM)SERIOUSLY THOUGH Wrote: I used to play Runescape... then they brought in those member-only shenanigans and I just thought "fuck that". Runescape had strategy? Whenever I played back in 05 and 06 the only strategy was get dragon weapons and items, get God staffs, get Barrows gear and then you rofl stomp in the Guild Wars pvp and Arena. The only working strategy in that game was building 100 fires in a row to level up RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - Xannidel - 09-04-2012 03:01 AM Ohh yeah I remember doing that, and chopping yews and fishing for lobsters and minning rune essence for rune crafting and farming...ugh I was the quest master of that game, any new quests that came out I would be doing it almost instantly. Good times until my "friends" hacked me and stole over 3M worth of gear/items/weapons and armor. RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - BumblebeeCody - 09-04-2012 03:47 AM Can't go wrong with chess. RE: Classic Online Strategy Games - Arjahn - 09-15-2012 01:10 AM Pandemic 2 is strategic enough... except for Madagascar. WHY... WON'T... YOU... DIE? |
