The Warp Whistle (from Super Mario Bros. 3) is based on the Recorder from the very first Legend of Zelda. SMB3 implemented the Warp Whistle concept from Zelda (including the whirlwind animation, and the tune; which was built upon as a base for the Ocarina of Time theme.) The tune is also referenced in Wind Waker's "Forbidden Woods" OST and the Wind Ruins in Minish Cap.
