Most hated gaming misconceptions - Arjahn - 08-09-2012 02:20 PM

What misconception or myths about Video games and the players annoys you the most?
Mine would have to be the "Pokemonz is for little babies, they don't have guns!" one. It's for everyone, kids can simply enjoy it and older gents can use all of the pain in the ass strategy behind battling and EV/IV training stuff.

RE: Most hated gaming misconceptions - elizasteave - 08-09-2012 05:52 PM

Mine is for the Mario that its for the beginners and for the matured people. Little do they know that many times in their life, they themselves like to play this game. Well, it is said for this reason that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I usually find that the Pokemon one is someone trying to insult you rather than actually make a false claim on it.
Something like "Pokemon is pretty easy, all you have to do is get level 100 and win". As you pointed out it's really not, it's incredibly in-depth with EV and IV training. Getting to level 100 is pointless now and has been since Ruby and Sapphire started EV/IV training.

I think any game that has a community that is in-depth with their game but not on the scale of bigger games.
Such as:
Devil May Cry/Bayonetta being a hack 'n' slash or mash X fest:
(Just as in-depth as any fighting game. Controls take a very long time to master. See Combo videos/Truestyle tournaments)
Resident Evil Mercenaries: Also another in-depth system that has some fierce competition (Even understand hit/hurt boxes and understand animation frames)

Common misconception:
Xbox LIVE is mostly a peer-to-peer network and not server based. (How much is Gold again now)?

Insert BS about what games are hardcore.

Are you saying that's the misconception or the fact? I'm sorry I'm just a bit confused.

I don't like how people assume that FPS games are for anyone and it takes no skill. Yes, it is easy to pick up and play, but there are so many things you can do to make it a challenge or change up the game. And in some FPS games there are even some exact sciences that all the true tryhards need to know.

Seeing as we play video games, we're all violent murderers. Also we have no lives because we like picking up a controller to have fun.

As in, I've heard people say "Xbox LIVE uses servers all the time" which is why we pay for it, when really it's not.

I'd leave my house but Jack Thompson is waiting by my door.

Also, you forgot to add, "never getting vagina".

Thank you very much for the clearing that up. I don't use XBL, but that is very interesting.

Am I the only one who doesn't get annoyed when people say Pokémon is for kids?

Even though it has a deep and complex meta, the game itself is obviously marketed at kids. There's no question about it. Ofcourse people who doesn't play the game are going to think that it's just a shallow, children, game.

I actually don't like Pokemon at all. But yeah, it is aimed at kids. Which absolutely doesn't mean it's crap. Hell, an awful lot of very good games have been aimed at kids. I think the annoying thing is the assumption that a game aimed at children can't have decent and challenging gameplay.

Misconception: Each Call of Duty is the same.

Horseshit: They are not the same. You may do the same thing in killing people but that's it. Just like in any Mario or Zelda game where you save the princess or the world, the main point of the games are where the similarities end. COD is not the same game year after year, and anyone who spends time with either companies COD game can tell the difference between them.

Misconception: Video games are for teenagers or kids. I don't have time for video games because I'm an adult.

Horseshit: I'm turning 30 this year, write full time for Examiner and work for Walgreens on the weekends, take care of my house and two kids, and I still find time to play video games among my daily activities. Gaming doesn't need to just stop because you get old.

Misconception: All Wii games require you to wag your arms around to play.

Horseshit: There are many, many Wii games that don't require you to move anymore then you would when using an Xbox or PS3 controller. Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, Smackdown Vs. Raw, Excitruck, I can go on and on. Yes, there are plenty of games that require movement, but not all of them. I asked a friend if he tried Mario Galaxy once, he said there was too much arm movement for him in the game. I said, "You barely move your wrist, and that's only when you're using a star to go from planet to planet, the game is controlled with the analog stick and Wiimote". He was busted.

Misconception: Guitar players believe gamers think they can play guitar after playing guitar hero.

Horseshit: No gamer plays Guitar Hero or Rock Band and then goes, "I can totally play a fucking guitar now". I've talked with at least seven guitar players who are offended by the games, and have this belief that people who play the games will think they can play guitar. Guitar players need to get off their high horses, we play guitar hero and rock band to enjoy the effects of playing music, that's it. We don't need to spend months, if not years, to lean the guitar just to play a song or two. For fucks sake, it's a game, get over yourself.

RE: Most hated gaming misconceptions - Nicknclank - 08-11-2012 11:38 AM

People who plays videogames have no life and no friends. They're like trolls standing under a bridge, but without any reason to live.

Frek' that! A lot of gamers have friends and a job!

This, 100% agree. It's fucking nuts that people think you don't have a life because you play video games. There's nothing worse then people putting you down for playing video games and then hearing them talk about Jersey Shore.

MW2 and MW3 were practically the same, no arguing there. Otherwise, mostly true.

No, no they aren't. There's a lot of things that make the games very, very different. Anyone that puts time into the games knows this.
