RE: Do you pirate? - CFMM - 07-17-2012 12:53 PM I buy from companies that I trust, and who do good things. Steam/Valve and the independent companies who publish through them? You have my dollar. Steam uses fair DRM, they have amazing business ethics, and they are overall a good bunch of people? EA? Fuck EA. I will pirate their games without ever even wanting to play them just on principle alone. Activision gets the same treatment. Both companies were formerly amazing businesses who were forward thinking in the industry and now they're just monsters. With movies, I really go out of my way to reasonably include legal means into my media consumption. I buy DVDs of movies I really really like, and I subscribe to Netflix's DVD-in-the-mail AND live streaming service. If there's something I really want to see that isn't available in the mail or through streaming, then I download it. I'm sorry, but I mean I'm doing what I can to be fair about it here. I avidly buy music in CD form, but if it's not available in a format I use, then I just download it. tl;dr: I try to be fair when I purchase/pirate. I get where you're coming from but why download a game even if you don't want it just to smite them? That doesn't make sense to me unless you're downloading it through a torrent then letting it seed so other people can steal it at faster speeds then deleting the file it wouldn't effect them at all it's just one more illegal copy of a game that you weren't gonna purchase anyway all it does is drive up piracy numbers making them think everyone wants their game so they make more of the same old shit, and what do you end up with, a game that you don't even want and even inadvertently encouraging them to continue making shit which goes against why you did it in the first place, I just don't understand that. RE: Do you pirate? - CFMM - 07-17-2012 01:36 PM It's kind of the same mentality behind stealing coffee creamer from a company you hate but unfortunately work for. You do it just because. RE: Do you pirate? - cingchris - 07-17-2012 03:11 PM I actually have one last thing to add to that last post (I only made this a new post because I knew it wouldn't update the thread if I just edited my last one and there for you probably wouldn't see this) stealing physical copies of things makes more sense for what your are trying to do just because you then take money out of their pockets where making a copy does nothing but make statistics. (I'm not saying I condone this activity, I'm just saying that it would make more sense to do that instead.) We've all done something out of pure spite in our lives at some point so I can understand this, even if you realize it's pointless and won't solve anything you do it anyway just to make yourself feel a little better but in the end it's an empty feeling and doesn't change anything. (Whoops, just went off on one of my random philosophical speeches) RE: Do you pirate? - CFMM - 07-17-2012 04:30 PM In the grand scheme of things I like to imagine that millions and millions of stars have lived and died scattering stardust throughout the cosmos and by a one in a trillion chance life found a way on planet Earth just so I could sit here at my desk and rip EA off of a few dollars. :3 RE: Do you pirate? - cingchris - 07-17-2012 04:32 PM (07-17-2012 04:30 PM)CFMM Wrote: In the grand scheme of things I like to imagine that millions and millions of stars have lived and died scattering stardust throughout the cosmos and by a one in a trillion chance life found a way on planet Earth just so I could sit here at my desk and rip EA off of a few dollars. :3 HA! "yeah i download their games because i fucking hate that company!!!". Then.. Just don't play that game? There's nothing that says you have to play every game ever, so if you don't want to support it, don't play it. You're not sticking it to anyone by downloading it. Ugh. |
