Agreed. Let's not forget TMNT 2: The Arcade Game for beat em ups.

The first thing my brother did when we got home was punching me in the face while shouting "DOUBLE DRAGON!". I guess mom were right that time..

Don't really know about you guys, but I think that final fantasy series are the best... I still love the 7th part and play it over and over again... Squaresoft and it's battle system ruled!

The Final Fantasy series is far from "cult" status. The games in this genre would be games that aren't popular, but still found their underground audience.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Banjo series?

Meh, that was a fairly big deal. Two game appeared on the N64 alone, not something to be taken lightly. Plus they were ported to the Xbox Live Arcade and have seen sequels since the original two.

I good cult classic I would say, would be Splatterhouse. Nobody plays it anymore. Quite brutal. I love it.

Another good one would probably be Snatcher. It was overlooked because it was it was on the Sega CD. Quite a fun game, though!

Adventure Island? I'm not sure about the popularity of that one. It didn't seem to be too well known to me, but I played all of the NES entries a lot growing up and while I think people consider it to be a little mind numbingly simplistic I always found it easy to pick up and play. I am easily amused, though.

Yuu Yuu Hakusho: Tokubetsuhen is an SNES fighting game by Namco which was only released in Japan. It's very unique in how the fights play out- there's never a tangible spatial difference between the two fighters besides "airborne" and "on the ground". The characters are represented in cutaway windows and it is designed to look and play out like an anime fight (click here for a fun video). There are balance issues abound, but the fun is really mostly because of how dang novel the concept is, and that earned it quite a bit of popularity online. I would love to make my own game like it eventually.

Little Samson was a great and mostly undetected NES platformer. Not the best, but just a really solid title that had interesting design choices along with good graphics and music to boot.

Cold Winter.

No one's heard of it, no one's played it, but it was what the sequel to Goldeneye should have always been.

When I tried Splatterhouse as a kid I hated it because of how grim it was. Today I kind of regret I didn't play it more.

Snatcher feels very overlooked. Especially if you take in mind that it was Kojima who was behind that game (IIRC). The only reason I knew about it was because it was mentioned at a site about fantranslations.

The entire DragonQuest series?

Those games are hard NOT to love,

And the first few had a very established cult following.

Problem is that DQ is a kind of big series now. So it's not very cult. Especially not in Japan where it gets to be a best-selling game even before it comes out.

What about PSO? (Phantasy Star Online)

I personally feel that it might be a cult classic. Especially the Dreamcast version due to the console being unpopular.

Yeah it kinda slid right under everyone's radar. Besides the people who live underground.
