Space Invaders, when released in 1982 in Japan, caused a temporary shortage of the 100-yen coin in Japan, due to it being over played so much, this happened within a year.

Need a source on that
Another interesting thing about space invaders- It accidentally creating the difficulty curve. The aliens were all supposed to move as fast as they do when there's only 1. However, no machine at the time could handle such power, so they moved slow. As you destroyed them, the machine had less to process, and so, they moved faster.

The game would be so hard if they all moved fast.
Also: did you know his awesome gameplay was fruit of an incident?
When his creator finished the developing of the game and tried it himself, he was frustatedly disappointed because the games was freaking slow, compared to what he inted it to be. There were too many sprites to menage for the poor CPU back then. Then he noticed that by blasting them off the remain ones were gradually, increasing their speed, because the CPU has a less heavy work to do.
By this any success of the player was rewarded with a superior challenge. So the creator of the game decided it was a good thing and the game was made as we all know.
Unintentional difficulty curve, I like it Big Grin
