Unless the versions have a specific visual difference (New kirby has a different name for example.) The only way to tell visually is by reading the fine print on the bottom of the disc... unless it says in the back of the case somewhere.
The other obvious way is which rating system it uses. ESRB for America, PEGI for europe, CERO for Japan etc.
Doesn't it usually say NTSC or PAL somewhere?
NTSC is what you want if you're american.
PAL is what you want if you're from Europe.
Yup euro games have a big PAL above the Nintendo logo usually in the bottom right corner. US games sometimes have NTSC, but sometimes they don't.
There are a few ways to check:
~Sometimes the US will have a different box art to us
~On the front or back is should say PAL (usually by a Nintendo logo)
~There are small triangles on the spine of Wii games to show where in Europe it was assembled. Obviously the US wouldn't have this
~The game rating should be from the BBFC/PEGI/USK
~The Wii won't play it (unless it's modded)
