Could someone explain to me what reputation is, and how we accumulate it?
I've got a rep of 1, and I have no idea how, I've seen people who have got a rep of 4, and I've been on longer than them, and posted more.
Is it just the number of topics, and posts in said topics that put it up, or is it something else?
You can give reputation points to aperson by clicking the button right next to "find".
It all depends on the quality of your posts I think and what do you do to the community.
IMO I think the "Thanks" system is enough. Reputation, in my professional experience, just leads to elitism and votewhoring.
edit: Actually I hate the "Thanks" system too but it's not my site so it isn't my call.

The thanks system is ok. It makes people know that they are posting things that are actaully worth something. About the reputation I'm not so sure, and although I do see people whoring about reputation points, I have nothing wrong with it.

The thanks system is ok. It makes people know that they are posting things that are actaully worth something. About the reputation I'm not so sure, and although I do see people whoring about reputation points, I have nothing wrong with it.
I only bring it up now because I formerly was the community director of a very large gaming community and their reputation system was a broken unbalanced mess and it led to a pretty bad division in the community. DYKG isn't that big of a site, so hopefully they will not have the same issues.
It's just a bit of fun realistically, And as stated by 'Sohakmet' it allows people to see if a user posts useful or just genuinely interesting content.
I was part of a relatively large community years ago and they had a similar system and it worked fine I never recall any problems arising. And even if people do 'votewhore' does it really matter? I mean they are hypothetical meaningless points that amount to nothing...
Keep it or scrap it, I don't really see that it makes much difference. I figured this and the thanks thing were just a template thingy for this particular forum. I don't see any reason to be bothered either way.

So long as the admins don't play favorites and let it be known that elitism and circlejerking is against the rules then I'm fine with that.
If people start to make bones about it, there will be many a ban given out. I don't know about the rest of the mods and DYKG himself, but I have zero problem giving out bans for people that start stupid shit that doesn't belong here. There needn't be any worry about dividing the community.

But, like, hypothetically. Playing favorites sucks.
Reputation is there for a purpose. Those who try to abuse it will be dealt with accordingly by the site admin and moderators. Its a way for others to show appreciation for the help and information provided by others. So I think it should be kept.
It just seems confusing to have two systems in place. I think "thanks" is better suited for this forum mostly because there's a lot of posts for help in video games and submitting trivia.
edit: I don't even know how to give someone reputation. There's a button for Thanks but I don't see a rep button anywhere. It's just confusing.

As I see it, you can thank anyone for anything. You'll eventually find yourself thanking one user in particular multiple times. However, you will not go hunting down for all of that user's posts just to thank him on every single one. Mainly because you won't feel the need to thank him for a post where he describes his graduation experience, or w/e.
Now, thanks will come and go as the threads come and go, but, reputation stays on the user profile as a permanent mark on how helpful or troublesome he is for the community. There is not a "No thanks" button, so the only way you can let know people of someone who is a troll or of similar kind is by going to his profile and giving him a negative rating with an added comment, something the "Thanks" button cannot do.
And there is also the fact that you can thank someone and not care for his reputation. It just, kind of, different commodities to be used individually.

Now, I'd like to know why you can give more than one rating to any user.
Was an unchecked box in the settings. Should only be able to rate once now.

I don't understand your example. If I post something that I need help with and get that help, or see someone helping someone else, or just doing something good then that's what the Thanks button is for. I don't understand why I would have to dig through someone's posts to give thanks. The way I understand it, if you see someone doing good, say Thanks. That's why we have the button.
The only thing I don't like is elitism and weighted reputation, namely a new user who is trying to learn the ropes, and some dickhead with 1,000 reputation comes in and knocks him way down into the red. That can and will alienate that user and make him feel unwelcomed. Believe me, I've seen it happen. That's kind of why I viewed the Thanks system as the lesser of the two evils. You get a thanks for doing something worthy, and once you get a whole lot of Thanks you cannot exercise that weight onto a new user to disenfranchise them with a massive kick of negative. If you make it so no negatives can be given, then what you end up with is an echo chamber of sorts where cliques of people will constantly boost one another to exorbitant amounts of rep for no reason other than to fellate their own egos.
