Here is the article I was reading: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,...15,00.html

What strikes me as odd is how people want to execute him even if he is considered "insane." That is not how we do things people, we do not kill people, REGARDLESS OF WHAT CRIME THEY COMMITTED, just on the grounds that they are insane. What he did was atrocious and I believe he should pay for his crimes but to execute him is not the best way to do it. To me when I hear people say that, it sounds similar to saying we should kill all special needs people because they are mentally retarded. Something that I highly doubt people would agree upon doing so would that make people hypocrites?
Personally, I don't think he's insane. He supposedly planned out the whole thing. That takes a level of thought an insane person would not have. Yes, he is clearly not level headed, but most murderers aren't, anyway. My point is, I think he's sane and should go to jail for life without parole.
If someone is such a menace to society that he/she kills other people without a second thought just because he/she feels like it, I don't think this world is the best place for them.
Then lock them in solitary confinement until they die but don't kill them when they are considered mentally unfit for the norm life. They need to be treated.
Why not send them in space and have a battle royale?

Man, I loved that movie.

My problem is solitary confinement is that it IS prison. You can lock 'em in jail FOREVER or put them in solitary confinement which is the exact same. You're keeping them away from the rest of the world which is just a glorified prison with a different name which still costs the taxpayers.

I don't know what would be best. I want to say just kill him, but I already know so many good counter arguments for that. (Good video on it here)

I have to question, how "insane/mentally retarded" do you have to be to make a plan like that? ....BS maybe? Even if he is insane, why do that make a difference? Does that suddenly let people get a lesser punishment now?
My problem isn't with incarcerating these people for good, it's the fact that the taxpayer has to pay for them for the rest of their lives.

Just find an island no-one likes, and if someone is convicted beyond a shadow of a doubt, send them there to live their life.

Honestly,if it were me,i rather put them out of their misery then let them rot away because the person is unfit for society.

But so is killing them, and that makes every tax payer a murderer.

Yep, totally agree. Capital punishment isn't the way to go. A lot of people have been executed, only to be found innocent at a later time.

Labour is also an option to make lifers cost-effective - Make them manufacture stuff so that the money we spend on them goes back into society.

It wouldn't work. It's incedibly looked down upon (stuff here) and QI video here
There is a huge controversy over having prisoners manufacture ...anything, to the points it's compared to as "slave labour". Corporations, big business, the military, government (etc) all benefit from "prison slavery". I don't want to go too far off-topic and while it does seem ideal, it really isn't. Plus, suddenly finding out that your computer was built by someone who killed 12 people doesn't sound good for that company.

Regardless, we're paying for their still being alive. If nothing else, they could possibly earn a shorter sentence depending on the severity of their crime. No murderers or anything but still...
I still stand by the battle royale plan. The Running Man is now reality!

I second that notion.

Notion is now going up for vote. All in favor, say aye.
