I know that this topic could probably sort of fit in a dozen other threads, but I thought that it warranted its own post. What are your thoughts on how Skyward Sword turned out, specifically as compared to other Zelda games? Most people I've talked to about it say that it was a massive let down, and I sort of fit into that group, albeit without hating the game. I think it's decent enough, but definitely not as good as Twilight Princess or Wind Waker.
I thought it was good, but not great. The motion controls were off sometimes, the pointer was frustrating (this the only game I have to center it every 5 minutes), and the game didn't provide that much variety with only four areas that you kept having to return to. Other than that, the temples were great, the boss battles in them were good too, and the game had some pretty good charm. Still, I prefer Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time over Skyward Sword.
I enjoyed the heck out of it. And overall, it's my 3rd favorite Zelda game.

My only problem with the game is the dungeon sizes. I wish some of them were just bigger.
It just wasn't as good as I hoped.

It's a Zelda game so Nintendo definitely took their time in this game because it has to have that Zelda polish. But it wasn't as impressive to me as TP/MM/OoT/WW.

My main problem is that after playing big Xbox 360/PS3/PC games, coming back to an SD console hinders the enjoyment. Games like Uncharted, Mass Effect, DarkSiders, Skyim, The Witcher 2 (Even The Wind Waker) have huge beautiful looking environments with vast landscapes for the player to explore. Going back to an SD console where you face the limitations of the system means it's a step back on exploration combined with the horrible quality of SD graphics on a HD TV. Not only that but the overworld was just a step down in general. Compared to The Wind WakerTP with the great sea and Hyrule Field(though empty in many areas) you had a lot to explore. Once you get your loftwing in SS there is no reason to explore. You have the roulette island, thunderhead, pumpkin island, the 3 areas to progress with the story and obviously Sky Loft, but it feels dated and not like Zelda.

The graphics themselves looked stunning (on a Dolphin emulator) but playing on HD TV ruined the water colour style.

The motion controls were easily the worst part about Skyward Sword. I don't see the point in controlling my Loftwing with a motion controller when I have a working (mandatory) nun-chuck attached to it. It wasn't fun and didn't make any sense. What was a simple task in all the other Zeldas of slashing at Deku Baba now turned into a tedious chore of having to slash PERFECTLY horizontally or vertically depending on how their mouths are open. The frustration only increased with the electric Boblokins to the point I ended up using bombs on them and the Beetle on the stems of Deku Babas.

But I'm glad they had a much stronger emphasis on the story. The story was easily one the strongest in the series. Not only that but being that's the first in the timeline, we got to see the origin of Hyrule, the Triforce, Ganons ancestor, the creation of the Master Sword (and why it responds to Link).

The music is incredible. Nintendo and their insulting use of Midi files in TP was shaking off due to the emotional orchestral soundtrack.

Lastly:
Fuck Fi.
Fi is by far worse than Navi.

There is a 98% chance that you agree with me. Don't I just sound super smart. Like a highly super intelligent being able to use percentages for probability. Oh I am clearly NOT stating the obvious using obvious probabilities. Like me! LIKE MEEEEE!

I hate Fi so effing much. No over reaction to make my post seem funny and such, but honestly, I did swear at the TV around halfway through the game because I go sick of hearing that stupid "....percent chance" thing. The only redeeming part about Fi is how she fits into the story.
At the end of SS she says she has to reside in the Master Sword. Since SS is the beginning of the Zelda Timeline, it makes complete sense as to how Link is able to take the Master Sword from the pedestal. Everytime the next Link along the line approaches the Master Sword (ALttP/TP/OoT etc) Fi senses the ancestry of the hero which allows the sword to be taken by that games version of Link . I thought that was clever writing on Nintendos part.

That doesn't stop her from being fugging annoying throughout SS though. But I LOVE her theme song.
As a character, she's annoying and I would rather listen to Navi. As where she fits in with the story, just likr you said, it's clever writing.

I think if ninty got rid of her pointing oit the obvious, she would be way more enjoyable overal.
Oh god, I just realized something. With SS saying Fi is resting in the Master Sword, what if Nintendo decides to make a new game with Fi waking up?
I will always regard Skyward Sword as one of the best Zelda games of all time, mostly due to how Nintendo succeeded in what they wanted to do. They wanted you to be like Link, using the Wiimote to be like him, and feel like him, and to me it worked.

In the first Ghirahim battle, I would have to say that this is the only battle I have ever fought that I have found challenging, not throughout the game, but in my gaming lifetime, the fact I had to aim at the opposite of him was impossible at first, I still find it hard now. This is the only boss to ever have me sweating, out of breath, confused, annoyed, angry, and entertained at the same time.

The Legend of Zelda is the closest a game has come to effecting me personally while I play, and I thank Nintendo for that.

Also I have never found a companion annoying, so Fi wasn't annoying to me.

However, the only problem I had with SS was the lack of exploration and such. 3 areas reused for 6 dungeons was terrible. Nintendo could've fitted a lot more in there, but didn't, and that's why we have 3 of the same boss battles half the time.

Good game though, 50 hours spent well.

I liked the game, but I HATEHATEHATE the controls. I despise these new motion controls. I just want my old controllers back. I don't want to spend half my game trying to fix the motion crap just because the thing fell off the tv, or I want to go from sitting up laying down, or any other of a million reasons those horribly awful motion controls fuck up. I could barely pay attention to the game because most of the time I was very uncomfortable because once you set your controller you basically can't move.

Also, I agree- Fi is horrendous.

Did I mention I HATE these new motion sensor controllers?
Dammit Fi!

I just realised that means you finally got around to playing SS?

Yes! But I get so frustrated that I can only play for so long. The story is sooo good and the game itself is sooo fun, but god damn I hate the controls SadAngry
