This is pretty well known, but for some not so much, people who have never played the game would be shocked at how much was spent and put into it.
It's not wonder Sega failed.

The cost, of both the Saturn and Dreamcast version went up to $70,000,000, and of course with 2012 inflation, that's £9.84 million.
And I believe the second version went up to about that much as well.
The sad thing is, the only way we'd ever see a third game is if a very dedicated Sega fan won the lottery...

Edit: It's only $47,000,000, not $70,000,000

$47,000,000 was the cost of the Dreamcast version, the Saturn version was near completion before Sega just said to put it on the Dreamcast, so they already spent about $23,000,000 making the Saturn version, then just ported it.
Oh, and also, another Did you know.
In Ryo's house, in the main room, there is a TV, and under the TV in a cupboard is a Sega Saturn. The game is set in 1986, which is about 8 years before the release of the Sega Saturn. The Saturn is a reference to the fact that Shenmue was meant to be on the Saturn, before it was ported, and this is a little homage to that.

Nope. Was just an embellishment of the truth.
Oh well, it was still incredibly expensive at the time.
